The UK has lots of options - but most of those are MVNOs.
NZ also has quite a few MVNOs (like Telstra, Slingshot, Black & White, Orcon, CallPlus, Digital Island, etc over here).

They rely on someone elses network to work, so any network outages to the MNO effects them too.

AFAIK, The UK only has 4 (four) Mobile Network Operators (MNOs). 1) Orange/TMobile 2) O2, 3) Vodafone, and 4) 3.

Considering our poulation is around 1/10 that of the UK, for us to have 3 (three) MNOs (well, 2 and a half at the moment since 2D does roam on voda for some of it's customers) is pretty impressive IMO.

In fact, check this list of MNOs in Europe. Very few countires have more than 3 MNOs, and almost none have more than 4

Yes, just as a random exercise I've had a look at the first offering on the carphonewarehouse.com site.

HTC Desire (can't get it here except Parallel Import) on Vodafone 24 month plan (30 quid a month which relatively equates to $30):

Handset is Free ($1300 here Parallel Import before you even think about plan charges)
Minutes Included 300 anytime any network
Data Included 500Mb anytime any network

Find anything that compares to that in NZ on any of the networks, don't even get me started on Broadband

PS, this is off topic so maybe a good idea to quit and start on a new thread

what sort of f'd up exchange rate are you using where 30 pounds relatively equates to 30 dollars? 30 pounds is more like 60-75 dollars (fluctuated quite a lot in recent months but not so much as to get to 1-1 ratio)

and why would you expect a paralell imported handset price to even remotely compare to a UK bulk buying provider who also gives subsidys for purchasing a plan? It is such an abusrd comparison.

I'd be surprised if even Telecom or Voda NZ had the purchasing power with Nokia that UK providers do. A Uk provider will sell 10 times as many devices as the NZ provider - so the price they pay for any given handset is going to be waaay lower than an NZ provider.

and what the hell is "any network" data?

Besides, your complaint was in relation to choice of networks, not price. My response was that your choice of providers was not as great as you might think because you are comparing UK MNOs+MVNOs with only Nz MNOs - which is an entirely different comparison

$1300 is probably the most expensive parallel importing site, $749NZD from Clove.co.uk Shipped

why would you lock yourself into a 500mb mobile broadband plan for 24months? that 500mb is likely to be gone in 10 days forcing you to pay for overage charges

the UK is bigger, has a lot larger population, is a lot closer to the servers etc, so you can't compare NZ which is a dot in the ocean to the UK

Also I fail to see why you are on the Telecom mobile forum, if you are "As a customer of 'the other one" sounds like you are just trollin

I'm not using any exchange rate as it's irrelevant as if you live in the UK you pay pounds and here you pay dollars which is why I said 'relatively' as $30 as a percentage of my annual income is roughly equivalent to what 30 pounds would be to my UK salary.

Even if you pointlessly took the literal exchange rate, on VFNZ for $60 a month you get 120 anytime minutes and 600 texts (I forgot to mention that the VFUK plan I quoted had unlimited texts to any network too)

Your point about the number of carriers is valid if they all worked but my original point is that they don't so you're left with more like 1 and 1/2. Plus it doesn't matter how many networks you have if they all have pretty dismal offerings

Telecom now says 200 cellsites were affected at the height of this morning's Auckland/Northland outage (up from 126 estimate this morning). Latest update of NBR's article includes Gen-i's latest explanation to corporate clients.

HiJacked - but, on that basis a pound would be the same as a euro which it is not the same device is cheaper in euros than pounds.

Only read about this outage now. Must be good luck living in between Taupo and Auckland. Very rarely suffer any XT outages in Hamilton. Good to hear the latest issue was resolved reasonably quickly.

Yes we are having some issues with customers north of the north island (including AKL).

Auckland wasn't north of the north island last time i looked... the three kings islands and norfolk islands perhaps.
