Haven't had this problem at all until today, it is a real pain.

I can only repeat if anyone else does have the issue where google or facebook or any other common site does timeout then please do ring up and log the case.  No one yet has linked to my current case so it's pretty hard to raise the priority of the case when only one person has the issue.

I'm happy to PM the case number to link to (but don't want to post it public as it links to my own personal info) if you're having issue with logging the case and getting it escalated.

The specific issue I have managed to dupe is when using Firefox (and IE too), the search box up the top right which searches via google.com periodically returns a unresponsive site error.  Today it's not exhibiting the issue for me.

I have found after a period of idle time then I try and go to this link:

http://www.google.com/search?q=geekzone+new+zealand&ie=utf-8&oe=utf-8&aq=t&rls=org.mozilla:en-US:official&client=firefox-a

Either using IE or Firefox I can get a no response error back, in the LAN trace I see a reset back from the remote site.

I am going via the Proxy Cache farm so it may be related to that, but I can't confirm that is the root cause.

With these periodic issues it's hard to track them down unfortunately, even more so if no one also logs a call.

I agree. I rang a few times last friday and after speaking to the call centre actually got put through to someone who actually knew what i was talking about, said he was watching the posts here in geekzone, and logged my fault with a ticket number.

I am experiencing the same problem with facebook, trademe, and some other overseas sites. The problem is also being experienced via home ADSL and a t-stick which is on the xt network, so two totally different access points. lets hope for a resolution, but PLEASE log the fault. They don't know if you don't tell them

Any chance you can do two things, one run a traceroute (in windows "tracert url.com") and also install wireshark on your machine and take a LAN Trace of all traffic over the wire.  Then you could e-mail me with the trace file.

Just a FYI I don't work in Broadband support, but am working directly with the Level 3 guys on this issue.

Move to New Zealand's best fibre broadband service (affiliate link). Note that to use Quic Broadband you must be comfortable with configuring your own router.

When people PM me with further details please include the case number which should be a 12 digit number starting with "234".  So far I still only have 3 case numbers (mine and two other) so the more customers who log cases and PM me the numbers the higher the priority the case will be given.

I've had this problem for a while (posted about it in a another thread). I'm 99.9% sure it's the proxy as changing the URL to https makes it work perfectly. Called up Telecom again to ask if they can remove me from the proxy, and I was told they need to wait for the response from the web apps team, who are on leave till next week.

They also said that the problem is now considered a general fault, as several cases have been logged, so it will be dealt to with more urgency. It was also mentioned that it's on the faults page, but I suspect that they mean the call center staff have been told about it, because it's not on the website.

The quick (albeit rather irritating) fix is to go to https://google.com and https://facebook.com when it stops working, it will work for other sites as well, provided that HTTPS is available.

I also had this problem, but thought it was an error on my side (read 'error' as: my old D-Link G604T modem router) - the problem usually temporarily subsides with my old router by 'restarting' it (unplugging power source), however from experience that only provides a minute or two's access to google/facebook.

Recently I've bought a Belkin N600DB modem router (as an upgrade to the prior router, not bought specifically to address this issue), and curiously enough my browser exhibited the same access problem to certain websites - confirming that the error is definitely not from my side, and until today I prompted myself to check these forums to see if any other members of the public are experiencing the same issues.

Edit: Just noticed this has already been suggested, as per above
A note to fellow telecom users: if you're experiencing issues with loading facebook specifically you may wish to connect through facebook using HTTPS instead of the usual HTTP protocol.
You do this just by entering the following URL into the browser: https://www.facebook.com
Obviously this isn't the ideal solution, and all games and apps within facebook can't be played through HTTPS, but given the current circumstances it's the most reliable method of accessing facebook until Telecom acknowledges and addresses the problem.
