I have had VDSL for two weeks now and I am noticing an improvement in speeds compared to ADSL, mostly. I can get up to 38.00Mbps down and 9.69 up but nearly every time I do a speedtest on either Zeus or Telecom.co.nz I get low speeds until I refresh.

First test on Zeus tonight on my PC, Win7 running Explorer 10 here in Lake Tekapo 2.15Mbps D/8.12 Up. A refresh 36.19D/9.09 Up.
On Telecom 7.50D/9.68 Up. A refresh 19.93D/9.69 Up.

Sometimes I get the perfect sawtooth but tonight I'm getting peaks at the start and end with a flatline in the middle. Odd. Could it be because we are a tourist town there is quite a bit of pressure on the exchange or are there evil doings afoot? ;-)

A BIG thanks to all the geeks who come on here and take the time to help us "I've pushed the big red button on why doesn't it work?" types.

Cheers, Rusty.

Got my VDSL connected, I'm having some troubles bridging the Technicolor TG589vn v2 router.

I'm using the Technicolor bridged as modem connected to Billion 7800N router authenticating via EWAN over PPPoE, however I'm getting a "no response" error on the 7800N.

What I did was:

Technicolor
- setup as bridge
- disable DHCP
- plugin the 7800N to one of the ethernet ports

Billion 7800N
- plugin the cable from Technicolor to EWAN port on the 7800N
- setup WAN as EWAN over PPPoE and enter all the details

I went to the "Home Network" panel on the Technicolor, none of the ethernet ports shows up being used, the modem and router isn't talking to each other.

What did I do wrong?

Don't disable DHCP on the Technicolor.

I emailed telecom and they say my theoretical maximum is 26.9 download, isn't that a little low for a maximum? I thought people were getting in the 40's with VDSL.

Just tried that, still getting no response.

When I go to the EWAN setup page on 7800N, the maximum MTU it allows is 1492, however on the Telecom VDSL page it says the MTU should be 1500, does that make any difference?

Depends on your distance from the exchange. Our speed checker does check notoriously low though... (Mine says 26mbps I get 38mbps for download) not  saying its wrong  just that it does go a little on the  safe side

try using DHCP on the router, then disable on the modem

138 meters away that sounds really low to me.

It's very hard to estimate speed until things are connected, we underestimate these things for a reason else you'll get customers go "Wait, you said I'll get this and I'm getting this instead, I want all the refunds"

Update on my install at an apartment.

I was scheduled for an install between 12 and 5pm yesterday.  Chorus tech rang about 4.45 to say he was running late.  He arrived about 5.15pm, to install the master splitter.  Initially this was planned for the comms room, however he installed it in the alarm panel where the line came into the apartment.  I think he was pressed for time and I got the impression that doing the work in the comms room would be slower.  He said the location would make no difference.

He checked the phone and Internet where still working (on ADSL), which they where, they went off the to exchange to do his thing.

About 9pm I received a TXT saying the install was completed, however I couldn't establish an Internet connection.  The modem can establish a DSL connection but not a INTERNET connection.  I rang the 0800 to raise a fault who put me through to level 2.  They said they could not even see the modem connection, but tried to tell me the DLM process meant the modem wouldn't connect until the next day.  I tried to explain that if there is no connection, how can the DLM process work?  So he put me through to level 3, but explained they would probably say the same thing.

However the level 3 guy was great and said it looked like the tech connected the wrong port (ironically the same thing happened when I moved into the apartment a few months ago) and raised a fault back to Chorus to fix.

So now I am stuck with no Internet (again!) and no clue as to when it will be fixed.  As I work from home at lot this is a major problem.

This morning I went out a bought a SIM card and 3GB of prepaid data, and put in the t-stick I own into the USB of the modem.  This worked fine for about 30 mins, then the light on the modem went RED.  I have not resolved this yet.

So questions for those can can help:

How do I know when a job raised back to Chorus has been scheduled?  Chorus don't usually communicate directly with customers, so how I can track the job?

Shouldn't the tech has checked end-to-end connectivity before signing off the job?

Does the location of the master splitter make a difference?

Also a comment to Telecom in general (and I know this is a problem with lots of tech companies) - get your staff decent training.  It is better for a person to say they don't know the answer to a question than to assume or guess or base their answer off "i heard this from Bob who I sit next to".  I know DSL is a complex beast but that's what level 3 are for.

Wow that sucks... I would have mad the tech check to make sure it was all working before he left. If it didn't i would have made him correct it before he left. When you pay for a service and you end up getting no service that is unacceptable. I always hold people accountable when i have payed for something this goes for restaurants ,shops , isps ect...

1) Yes

2) Physical location, no. But it's connection point on the line must be *before* any other devices (jackpoints, alarms, etc) connect in. So the line should come in to your house, then to the splitter, which will have one cable run off to the VDSL jack, and another head off towards all your other stuff that uses the phone line.
