You think?? This has almost been as bad as Spark!!!

I posted here because as I said originally:

"Spark chat is hopeless. Twice I went on, twice I got the same troubleshooting at my end questions, twice I got told I'd get a call back from Complex support, twice I got the usual Manila call centre people asking again the same damn questions.

It's getting annoying, going round and round in circles."

So day 8 and still the same. I filled out a complaint form 2 days ago but have heard nothing back from Spark.

I sent you a PM this morning asking for details so I could try to help further. Please respond to that if you'd like my help.

Cheers - N

Anyway, wiring is good, checked jackpoints (only 2 of 4 are in use) they're good too, no corrosion or ants or anything...

One has a filter and the only phone in it, one has the modem in it. Other 2 are empty.

Well, that could be your problem right there. Those extra jackpoints, including the unused ones are line taps, and cause reflections on the cable. They won't cause an issue for voice frequencies, but can play havoc at xDSL frequencies. Can you get your husband to disconnect them all except one, so there's no wiring stubs (used or unused) and see if that improves the error rate.

Also, I'm sure @Talkiet can help if you flick him your details.

Of course!! It's my end after all! The other 2 jackpoints that have been like that for 6 years are suddenly the issue.

No I am not doing anything else here now.

Over it. Took a thousand years just to log in again. Mail won't even send now either.

Pmed the offer of help - thanks.

by that logic nothing in the world should ever fail because it was working at one point for a period of time.

good luck with it but from reading threads on here about 90% of peoples issues are inside their own premises.

If you husband was a ex telecom technician it should be a relatively simple job to do and only take a few minutes.

people have given you options of things YOU could do to try and fix it, that dont take much effort especially if your husband has worked in this industry.

what harm is it in trying?

what are you going to do if your ISP comes back and says there is no issue on the street?

Your problems back in December 2010 (browsing and large downloads cutting out) were likely due to intermittent problems with their caching set up at the time (which has since been decommissioned). While you may be experiencing similar symptoms the cause will not be the same.

Talkiet gave me the line test results now.

Today we are playing around, this morning things were great...so I think, maybe, I have tracked it down. Investigate further later...

One thing, if Spark had done that in the first place I would have been way happier. Having the call centre people go round and round with the usual reboot your modem, just puts you off them altogether.

Anyway.....progress is made now. So whatever the outcome, thanks to Talkiet and Geekzone, at least people listen and check things out properly.  Excellent, why can't Spark support?

The old school caller ID unit. So far, so good. I think it's cured, did nothing else yet, just ditched it.

Looks ok, smells funny. Whatever, it's behaved since that was taken out.

I forgot about it, cause the phone went into it, then that went into the jackpoint, so whenever I took that phone out, that came, but taking old bell phone, it was still in.

Whatever....it's gone and the net has behaved all night and all morning.

Once again an issue is internal wiring. It really is the most common cause of xDSL faults!

I spoke too soon.

Seriously. This is bizarre.

My son left at around 11:30am yesterday...when the timeouts came back. he shut down the PC and left.

It came right. All day. All night. This morning great.
I didn't trust it though.

So I turned his PC on again and left it on all day. It was 99.9% OK, once or twice a bit of a hesitation on NZherald but nothing that couldn't be attributed to random traffic.

So he walks in the door just earlier and then walks into his room and clicks on Chrome and the modem dies.
Totally.
I reboot it, it dies again.

Now that is bloody weird.

It's not his PC, I have messed with that recently, he had an issue getting his latest game going.

I'm going to change the network cable but really? He just sat there, he hadn't touched the PC, cables or anything.

He will have something running, maybe in the background, that's doing a lot of network traffic.  Torrenting?  Ended up on a botnet?  Streaming the 24 hour Happy video on youtube constantly?

Nothing.

I have a new modem in now. Number 4. But this one is brand new.

                                    TPLink                         Netgear

SNR Margin (0.1 dB):    121       120                   130        120

Attenuation (0.1 dB):     65        10                    15         0

Bandwidth (Kbps):         15964   1144                 15419   1208

No lost packets, no errors.

Combination of things perhaps? 3 screwy modems and a caller ID unit.
