ronindanbo: I dont know, my thoughts are that not charging uploads has more to do with it as TIVO data rules would just ensure the usage meter would not pass a specific service type (as happened with go large and probably big time) or be ignored by the billing system therefore the change upload rules stuffing things up would be more logical to me.

I'd also point my finger at the no upload. Ever since then, download usage has shot up. So here we are, meant to be getting 'more' usage because upload is not accounted, and unfortunately for many of us, we are getting 'less.'

Ironic huh?

Either way, we're getting right royally done by Telecom. How can we get to the right person to get this looked at? The problem with going through CS is that there's no guarantee it will go any further. This is obviously not an isolated issue.

BigHammer: Was the 'policy' created to cover up a stuffup also? wouldn't be the first time!

The "free upload policy" wasn't created to cover up anything. There's a good reason for it - and it's probably linked to P2P usage. In my view (and confirmed on unofficial talks) the free upload will encourage more people to share their stuff instead of downloading only. It seems strange, but reality is this will move the source of shared content from overseas to New Zealand, reducing the impact of P2P in international traffic.

The more people that throw up a fuss about it, the more exposure it will get.

I was also contemplating leaving, but you're right - there is perhaps one other ISP with speeds and latency as good as Telecom at the moment (TelstraClear). I've heard Maxnet is good, but i've been with the little league before and there were too many problems.

After they've just had to fork out $500,000 to previous go large customers, hmmm they might be more willing to get this sussed.

That makes sense. It does seem however that there's an issue with the implementation. The only device connected to the 'net from midnight to 8am here was the TiVo and the usage meter says we downloaded 39.77MB.

I agree it seems more likely the problem is related to the no upload metering.  I only threw the TiVo theory in as an idea. So far we're really just guessing as to what the cause of this is, right?

(And yes I have had a 'discussion' with number one son regarding his downloading habits!)

This is good in theory, but doesn't change much unless we also get free national traffic.

Edit: by free national traffic I mean free national downloads.

all traffic is free, it's just capped is all. you go over the cap then its not free anymore (depending on your plan).

In defence of Telecom I think people sometimes for get that they are a company in business to make money, freebies arent part of any business model unless they are enticements.

BigHammer, all TiVo traffic on Telecom is zero rated, so I would hope that it is not counted, and then taken off at biling time.

Exactly my point. 39.77MB with nothing connected doesn't make sense!

Edit: Pretty sure last month there was no adjustment at billing time so I don't think this is TiVo traffic

Does Tivo have to be connected to your modem? I am unsure how it works. Could be overhead?

Edit: then again, that is alot of overhead

Yes EPG, updates and messages come over teh interweb. And of course CASPA downloads, not that we have partaken of this service as of yet.

EDIT: (bah too early in the am) TiVo traffic is zero rated on the Telecom network so in theory there should be nothing on the usage meter to reflect any TiVo traffic. And as our usgae seems to have mysteriously almost doubled over the last ~month I doubt it's the TiVo

No, its not the Tivo. Not in my case anyway, as I don't even have a Tivo.
