binarybrother: Ok if you're on Big Time then try some downloads from http://zeus.geek.nz/ and see what you get. That's certainly a TNZ domestic located server.

Mediafire is international so traffic will get 'managed'

Ya and thats the problem!
How many people actually do the bulk of their downloading from local servers?

I already know local traffic isn't managed. But I'd prefer local traffic was and international wasn't

Exactly, not many other countries I know of DO this with any of their internet packages, and I've lived all over the world.
I signed up for an unlimted plan, I realized it was "traffic managed", but this is bloody ridiculous!

Yup I can appreciate that a majority of access is to international sites and that people expect to be able to access international sites at better than dialup speeds. It was just the comments that all downloads were going slow that made me question the domestic vs international speeds.

Do any other ISPs offer all you can eat plans or is it just Telecom? Choice and voting with your feet is often the best method to show a company their service sux :P

I wouldn't call Big Time "All you can Eat" Maybe "All you can Eat if you don't mind waiting forever to be served" perhaps.

Now though, it's become a laughing stock, to be honest - when compared with other countries - this multi billion dollar empire known as Telecom spent millions of dollars paying their C.E.O. last year and cannot even be bothered putting their customers first and listening to their needs.
They're convinced that false advertisment is the way to sell a product. I admit, I was sucked in for a while, but I've now been bit on the backside, and it hurts.

Well if another ISP provided it.
I wouldn't be with Telecom

My point exactly, and if Telecom think this is a way to make us upgrade to a higher priced "GB limited" plan of theirs, they've got another thing coming - nobody will do it. And it's just plain bloody NASTY marketing tactics from a terrible company which don't even deserve to have half the customer's they've got.

sigh.. it saddens me they have caught onto mediafire.. that escaped there traffic management for quite some time.  I dont do a lot of downloading from such sites however.
What really annoys me is streaming from justin.tv and ustream is completly borked now. Go back 3 months (the last time i was really using it) and it was fine. Im locked into a contract until august, after that ill be moving isp and at this stage it will be to slingshot who have the best deals imo

Move to New Zealand's best fibre broadband service (affiliate link). Free setup code: R587125ERQ6VE. Note that to use Quic Broadband you must be comfortable with configuring your own router.

Okay guys and gals - listen up. I just recieved a phonecall from a Level2 technician at Telecom, informing me that there IS some form of Outage (?) for Big Time customers, and this is NOT (I repeat!!) NOT a permanent problem, this will be resolved, and Customers will be informed via email when the issues have been resolved.

(I asked for that statement of it not being a permanent problem to be issued to me in writing, for legal reasons!!!).

So, hang in there folks.

So do you have it in writing yet?
Im tempted to call up shortly and complain

Having a reduce of speeds by 10x is unacceptable, I Accept this plan will be speed limited, but its so limited now I cant even keep downloads running

Join the club - I got told that it would be fixed ASAP, but they're still working on
the issue apparently (I just finished talking to them).

The thing is - The Phiilipines people who you almost always get transfered to when
you phone 0800 GET XTRA for technical help support usually don't know a damn
thing of what they're talknig about.

The one I spoke to today said that it was possibly caused by an alarm system
within my house... even though I explained to her quite thoroughly that I did
not have a bloody alarm system anywhere within my property!!!!!

I guess its best calling up after hours. Atleast then you get a new zealander who knows what they are talking about.
