wreck90: I expect the reason is due to the new copyright laws beginning in Sept 1st .

Telecom rightly believe that network utilisation will drop, therefore they know they can add customers without needing additional bandwidth.

Makes sense to me.

LOL.

(I'm assuming you're joking)

Cheers - N :-)

theres always one..

The new laws will make a difference. The question is , by how much.

Not everyone has the intelligence or spare cash (such as GZ subscribers) to pay for the various work arounds of which there are many.

Getting a bit off topic now, but I seriously doubt people will need to bother with VPNs, invite only torent etc.

Rights holders have to pay $25 per complaint. They need at least 3 complaints before it can get to court and they have to pay a further $200 to get it that far.  There is no way they can afford to go out spamming people who dload a few movies or songs here and there with complaints.  They will have to restrict their complaints to a few of the most egregious users.

Besides which, torrenting as a proportion of net traffic has been dropping steadily year on year. Things like streaming video (e.g. youtube, which this law does not affect at all) take up a much bigger percentage of traffic nowadays

It is just an opinion, I freely admit I could be completely wrong :) Perhaps the fear of being caught is the deterrent.

I question telecoms timing, offering extra data simultaneously to the new copyright law. Is it coincidence? Possibly.

How about I clear it up for you?

It's a coincidence. They are two unrelated things. There is no conspiracy. One is not necessarily a causal factor on the other. There is a temporal correlation only.

Unless of course, _I_ am part of the conspiracy - placed, years in advance, by the Illuminati within Telecom - so that, at the appropriate time, I could be activated by my Recording Industry handlers to increase caps just as the expensive and not ideal copyright law enforcement changes are made.

Or, as I say above, you could believe me when I say it's a coincidence.

Cheers - N

ps. This post is (even more than usual) my personal exasperation, and in no way reflects the opinion of Telecom.

I'd believe you if they had also announced a new VPN bolt-on for their bundles :)

ISP's periodically refresh their plans usually offering more data for the same price (roughly correlated with falling transit costs), nothing new here.

What's nice to see is that Telecom, formerly a big slow to turn ship who'd be the slowest to refresh their prices... is doing things in a timely manner these days.

Great!

Didn't realise until today that we aren't on the total home that includes toll calls for free. Haven't really been looking at the bill for a while

Not bad ... even though I understand why, I still find it annoying that if you're on the most expensive Total Home package (THBB with the upgrade to 80GB's) you actually get the thinnest end of the wedge as far as these data bumps go.

I could believe a coincidence.

Certainly not complaining either :)

Oh dear. So disturbing! Please do not be alarmed by the black helicopters circling your home, or the men in white coats knocking at your door. It will all be over shortly!
