Hey there,

Just wondering if there is a chance of the VDSL being a possibility for my household. Our current DSL averages at around 0.5mb/s line speed (fastest I have ever seen is 3mb/s), with ~30kb/s content download (fastest 200kb/s). Downloading anything bigger than a few mb is a nightmare, and if there is more than one user at a time it is rendered unusable. This is compared to the expected 5mb/s that we apparently should be getting. We do live some distance from an exchange, and we have been told there is little that can be done by Telecom/Chorus to improve it. However, according to the Telecom website, VDSL is available in the area. Would the VDSL actually be over the supposed minimum speed of 15mb/s in our area, or would it still be severely slow compared to the expected speed as well? Could we actually use internet at peak times, with more than one person watching a Youtube clip, without it cutting out for everyone else?

If anyone could share their thoughts/knowledge on whether the upgrade would be worth it, it would be great.
Thanks :)

ianajmes: hi,

question re the tg589 vdsl modem, has anyone gone through the 'set up my technicolour gateway' tasks and what should the correct settings be? I errr... accidentally went through the set up and may have changed a couple of settings ..doesnt seem to have affected anything ,

thanks for any help

If it works, it's probably fine. Personally, mine is just set as a bridge here

It sounds like you'd be far too far out of range. Post some line stats from your modem?

By the sounds of things you're on an old DSLAM, there will be almost no chance of getting VDSL installed on your line. If you're a Telecom customer feel free to flick me a DM with your landline number and I can double-check this for you.

Just logged on to the vdsl2 router and pppoe connection is still down. So i pressed the connect button again, same error message: concentrator cannot be reached.
It is now 30 hours since Chorus put me on vdsl2 and i still cannot use the net. And weekend is just a bit over 24 hrs away.
Got no call from Telecom despite logged a fault yesterday and this afternoon.

I feel your pain - I had the tech install VDSL on Tuesday and its still not working properly.  Modem stats are now LOWER than they where on ADSL, and several sites don't load or load very slowly (for example the speedtest on Telecom's site doesn't run as it wont get past the latency test).

Chorus wouldn't accept there was an issue at first, as they say "a tech installed it so it cannot be wrong".

I have been stuck on 3G for 2 days now, I have rang Telecom several times, and even had them call me from my posts here, but still not resolved.

One good thing is that I found my T-stick works excellently on the Technicolour modem, and its actually very quick.

Here's hoping its fixed by the weekend or I will have to spend more time of the phone with Telecom seeking credit for the T-stick (I work from home so no Internet is not an option).

Good morning New Zealand!
My internet is still not working. This is more than 36 hours since Chorus switched me to vdsl2.

plambrechtsen:
That would be a bit hard for Chorus to handle. Since it would require Telecom to supply each Chorus installer with a modem and to track serial numbers for them all.

They used to each have an M10/M11 with them, when they first started doing ADSL installs and required a splitter for that lol :P

Hi - could use a little help understanding DLM changes.  I had VDSL installed last Friday and have been quite happy with the performance roughly 35 down and 10 up connection with 19 ms latency.  Very few errors other than FEC.  A really positive improvement form ADSL.

I seem to have had my first change to DLM profile last night (after 6 nights of connection).   I think I was on DLM-6 previously (8ms and 2 INP up & down).  When I checked this morning my modem was connected at 39 down/10 up (so a bit faster down). However, latency has increased to 29ms.  I used Telnet to check my profile and found the following:
Down (Local): 0.5 INP, Delay=8ms
Up (Remote): 1.5 INP, Delay=15ms
Attenuation is unchanged at 12.1 down and 26.2 up

I'm assuming my increase in latency is due to the higher upload delay.  However, I hadn't realized that the Up and Down stream connections could vary on the DLM profile.

Would appreciate a (simple) explanation and a understanding of what DLM profile I now am on and why the variance up vs down.

Thanks.

based on the INP & Delay setting you can figure out the current DLM stage:

DLM-1 1ms 0INP

DLM-2 8ms 0INP
DLM-4 8ms 1INP
DLM-6 8ms 2INP

DLM-3 16ms 0INP
DLM-5 16ms 1INP
DLM-7 16ms 2INP
DLM-8 16ms 4INP

Sorry..noob to this!

Well I had a successful installation though not without its issues.

The Chorus guy once he saw I had no phone on my line, thought he could install the master filter into the jack point itself. A good idea but there turned out to be no room there because of some nails that had been used to affix the box.

Anyway there some other issues that were more due to his own error but after about 2 hours it was done. He left the BT jack in the wall that I was using for DSL since he had no RJ11 or RJ45 female blocks with him. That didn't seem to be an issue.

Line stats are

DSL Type: ITU-T G.992.5

Bandwidth (Up/Down) [kbps/kbps]: 1,048 / 16,199

Data Transferred (Sent/Received) [MB/GB]: 927.01 / 22.64

Output Power (Up/Down) [dBm]: 12.6 / 0.0

Line Attenuation (Up/Down) [dB]: 1.6 / 9.0  <== that doesn't seem too bad

SN Margin (Up/Down) [dB]: 12.5 / 11.3

System Vendor ID (Local/Remote): TMMB / ----

When he called provisioning they tested the speed and measured 10/30 to the modem. I get 0.86/23.26 using Speedtest to Telecom's speedtest servers which is better than than 0.9/14.1 I was getting but I presume this will get better over time. I am about 300m from the cabinet I was told.

As an aside can somebody remind me what the password for the Telecom logon to the modem is so I can use bridge mode with my TP Link router?

Thanks

got my VDSL in this morning.

Chorus tech was great.

Modem stats show syncing at 10 up and 45 down, so pretty happy with that, although speedtest only showing around 1 up and 22 down. I assume this is to do with that optimisation process so should give it a week or so to get up to the max. Is that right?

ETA: and now within 20 minutes it has jumped to 42 down and 9 up on speedtest.  Sweeet!

Now 28/9 after about an hour after the installation. That's about what Chorus said I was get which was 30/10.

Pretty happy now.

Though I had 100/10 with TCL/VF I never found the 100Mbs that useful given the overseas bandwidth constraints and 150GB was way too restrictive. Much prefer 28/9 with 500GB with Telecom.
