Funnily enough latency on the Telecom speedtest server is all over the shop -- over over 20ms. Tests against Vodafone and Orcon <7ms (with DLM-1). Try it, you may be surprised.

Mine never varies by more than 1ms in all the times I have tried since being on DLM1. (against our speedtest server)

Clearly however Snap, being in Chch, is the best in terms of latency.

But I do know where our speedtest server is, I do know it's connectivity and I do know it's been recently breathed on in terms of capacity.

Any difference between this speedtest link above, and the easier to remember http://speedtest.telecom.co.nz/ or is it testing to same point?

I seem to get about a 20ms increase in latency testing to speedtest.telecom.co.nz

I believe they are the same physical server but the link I gave is a more recent version of the SW and has been tested with higher speed accesses that VDSL or UFB currently support.

Clearly your upstream is fine and the downstream is pretty variable. There is a chance it's due to congestion somewhere so the next thing to test would be to run a few tests at different times of day... Early in the morning (real mornings - like 8am! not 3am :-) and throughout the day may show whether the download performance improves or is at least less variable than it is at the moment.

Remember however that there are no guarantees that every user can saturate their connection at all (or any) times of the day... Different parts of the network (ours and Chorus') have different loads on them and none are deliberately dimensioned to provide full speed at all times. Obviously some parts do, but that's NOT a committed service level!

my good friend recently got VDSL and i asked him for a speedtest... it "seemed" a little low, then i found out he was testing on wireless :P so im here to stress to always speedtest using Ethernet connection

Nice to see Kiwis doing unboxing's, don't see them very often :)

BTW: You opened the box from the side which is why it was weird lol.

WPS is Wi-Fi Protected Setup. Basically if you want to connect something to the modem without using the password, you just Push the WPS button, and then use WPS on your mobile and it will connect automatically :)

Also that USB Port can be used for an external hdd, or a MF181/MF190 T-stick

Slightly more consistent but disappointing given I had 30/9 on day one and the modem reports 31/9. Also Chorus said they tested 30/9 to the modem.

Sync speed and real world throughput are not the same thing. What you're getting is exactly what your sync rate shows you should be getting.

You also need to remember VDSL2 is a best effort service and your speed is an EIR. There areabsoluely no guarantees of peformance and no CIR or dedicated bandwidth.

Could you include the graphs please? I'm interested to see if the download is consistent like mine, or quite inconsistent like your first post. Although better is possible than 26 on a 31 line, it's certainly not bad.

Also, please test over Ethernet and not WiFi. My laptop for example connects to our WiFi at 65mbit (it's got a horrible WiFi chipset in it) whilst everything else connects faster. When you add security on top of this as well as interference from neighbours etc real world speed is approx 20-30mbit.

Also: Never count on speedtests, they're not a real indication of your real line speed, just be happy you've got a faster connection than my ADSL2+ connection...
