huckster: I have to say, I just compared a parallel import HTC One X to a Telecom-bought one (1.28 vs 1.26 I think) and the performance improvement from old to new was very noticeable.

Apologies for this post. Turns out the dude with the Telecom-sourced version had turned on a "feature" to kill applications on exit. Moving back to the home screen meant restarting all the widgets. As soon as he turned this "feature" off, it was very smooth.

I think that randomly happens on the Telecom sourced versions. Mine does this, and I have no app killing software at all.

I have moved across the ditch. Now residing in Melbourne as a VOIP/Video Technical Trainer/Engineer.

Another 2 weeks pass and still nothing. I see version 2.05 in the offing, moving to android 4.0.4. That is just going to add insult to injury.
So far plenty of people have admired my phone and all I have been able to recommend to them is to get one, but not a Telecom one.

I'm going to speak my mind on this.

What on earth is causing the delay for these updates?

I can only think that someone at Telecom needs to slow the update process as a form of job protection. If you've been assigned only to test devices/updates, you certainly wouldn't want to release updates too quickly would you?

Either that, they have assigned a staff member or team the task of testing, who is overloaded with other work and doesn't have real interest in providing a good end user experience to the customer. Someone passionate about Android would be ensuring that updates make their way out within a reasonable timeframe.

I guess if you've already sold the phone, there is little profit to be made improving the phone with software updates.

I'm not trying to flame, I just would be interested in understanding the holdup.

The thing is, I came from Vodafone (after being a customer for a decade). I've found Telecom's network is just so much better. If Telecom provide top notch support for their handsets, they would have the whole package.

Telecom can't even argue that they are testing the update to prevent problems on the network. People update their phones themselves. The network doesn't crash. People's phones still work fine.

Telecom obviously have a botched process or the wrong person in charge of processing the updates.

Sorry, don't do facebook or twitter. Any update of this sorry tale from someone who does? Having trialled both a VF and 2D sim in my phone and have them work perfectly I see no reason for me remaining a Telecom customer. Incidentally, if there are any of the Telecom online team that read this, BRING YOUR CALLCENTRE BACK TO NZ....

Does the One X have a locked bootloader?

It can be unlocked via HTCDev.com but Telecom should not be shirking their responsibility to provide updates. HTC have provided the updates. It's up to Telecom to approve them.

So it is now approximately 100 days since 1.29 was released to European One X's (note 1.29 not 1.28!) bringing with it better power management, smoothness etc. How does it take 100 days to check if firmware works on your network? I have a vain hope that maybe we are just going to jump straight to 2.05 (fat chance).

So time to escalate. Can anyone tell me who the head of Telecom's Tech department is, and also the head of XT's retail arm?

Bearing in mind this phone is a flagship model for Telecom.

It will be interesting to see if HTC actually release the 2.05 updates as it upgrades ICS to 4.04, I wouldnt be surprised if HTC focus on their JB upgrade, while us poor telecom customers are stuck with 1.26!

I will never ever buy a phone from Telecom again.

Sammy have also released their first OTA upgrade for the SGIII, it will be interesting to see how long that takes for Telecom SGIII owners.

I don't own an Android phone so am reading this thread purely as a spectator and I have to say that the "Call the upgrade police" type comments from Vodafone and Telecom people earlier on just go to show what a complete lack of understanding they have of what owners of these devices expect (and should be entitled to expect) from their carriers. The carriers fight to be seen as *the* network to own these flagship devices on, but once the device has been sold there is little thought or care about the ongoing experience.

In my opinion, when you agree to offer a particular device, you are making a commitment to provide ongoing support for it too, and this should be done in a timely manner. If it were to retailers to provide updates to desktop operating systems like Windows, we would not tolerate them dragging their heels and the smartphone world is no different.

If you really think that people getting upset about these kind of delays are petty then you are working in the wrong industry in the wrong decade and you simply don't understand or have any respect for the consumers you're serving.

In the interests of accuracy I must apologise for my maths. I was a month out so it is ONLY 70+ days since 1.29 was released. Even HTCs own website says it should be up to 45 days for the roll out by individual telecoms. It's not a major version change just some bug fixes for goodness sake!

Obviously, that's marketing speak for:

"with our unique update system, the software updates designed to improve your smartphone, might happen... someday... if/when we can be bothered to get to it. Relax. You are on the Smartphone Network - the poor battery life (due to lack of software updates) will change the way you use your mobile!
