Axeman480: Everyone on ADSL2 with 10Mbits or higher that are in line to get fibre can just wait , everyone on the old ADSL should get VDSL2 from chorus until many years later when fibre is rolled out to everyone or 4G-5G. Been on ADSL since 2004 with 3Mbit max during off peak times (crappy Conklin mini dslam) on a line attenuation of 5.0 dB down. Pretty sure I am well overdue for VDSL , so yeah VDSL2 should be reserved for areas where fibre won't be rolled out till the next decade. What is the point of installing VDSL in areas where fibre is or will be laid? It's a waste of time and money!
VDSL2 only works with people who have 10Mbits sync or higher anyway. 10 is a stretch for good VDSL2 performance. VDSL2 performance can vary heavily on lines that might look otherwise similar for ADSL2+ statistics. See sbiddles's latest blog posts for information on this. I'd wager if your line syncs below 14-15 megabit on ADSL2+ you probably wont get decent VDSL2 at all unless the line is fault free. In that case you'd probably only see a boost to your upload speed, not download.
VDSL would only work for you if your conklin was upgraded to a whisper cabinet, which i imagine it wont be unless you're rural and its under the RBI. Even under the RBI i am not sure if all are getting whisper cabinets.
It isn't a waste of money to get VDSL2, chorus already has the equipment in the cabinets and exchanges, there is no (direct install related) cost to them for users getting VDSL2. Users have the cost of installing a master splitter, and a VDSL modem. But thats the user (or the ISP via subsidy on contract) paying, not chorus.
They are doing it with the bet that it will increase peoples demand for Fibre when it becomes available. Get them hooked on fast internet, and then fibre will be able to provide faster again, possibly at higher data caps. This will depend on us having media content available to use it for of course, so the ball is going to be passed into that court and at the moment, Sky will continue to hog said ball.
Yes VDSL2 does compete with fibre, and Chorus is making a risky bet. They do overlap, in fact i can get better VDSL2 performance than an entry level fibre plan. But if fibre was available at my house, would i switch if the monthly cost was the same and/or the data cap was higher? Definitely. Will fibre eventually have better than 30/10 entry level plans? Of course. Can you already get more premium plans of 100/50, and for businesses, even faster again? Yes. Fibre is a long term plan. For now the two closely overlap, but fibre will push VDSL2 out of the way in the future.
IMO the goal should be to get as many people onto the fastest connection they can get in their current situation, not to artificially restrict DSL services just because they want users on fibre.
