bbman: Roaming isnt going to be an issue as quad band wCDMA phones are already being released.

Quad UMTS doesn't solve the roaming issue. The only Quad band UMTS phones are either 850+1700+1900+2100 or 900+1700+1900+2100, nobody (that I'm aware of) has yet commercially released a handset that does UMTS 850 + 900.

First we had dual band then tri band and then quad band. Now we need 5!

The main fact in it is that NZ Com are using the Econet practice of whinning to the media on how unfair it all is that Vodafone and telecom are treating them.. I suppose they are trying to get Cunlith to draft some superfast legislastion to allow NZ Com to give super fast access to Vodafone and Telecom cell sites..

The irony of this is that Telecom are facing similair issues trying to deploy new 3G sites - Vodafone have a significant headstart. The reality is that many metropolitan sites these days are also unsuitable for co-siting of gear. There isn't much room on a single street light standard to put more than 1 operators panels..

Any idea when the next official announcement will be made? I recall it was suppose to be made over the coming month.

Still haven't seen any good arguments as to why they should keep building a 17 year old technology, which now only has good use in developing countries, not developed countries. Harsh but true.

Yea, I'm puzzled why either TCN or NZ Comms are rolling out GSM. GSM is dead (well heading that way at least). I think better to build out a full duel band (2100/850 or 2100/900) 3G network and forget 2G GSM. Within a couple of years, that will be the dominant standard; then of course LTE will be next kid on the block.

There is only one choice for Telecom now, 850MHZ WCDMA with 2100mhz capability in metros for capacity. Nationwide 850WCDMA network with a massive backbone and back haul capacity to support large numbers of rural and city users on mobile broadband, no competition like the LLU.

The decision will be made soon hopefully and i am sure it will be the 850mhz WCDMA network that it needs to be!

By the way did anyone hear Ernie on Bill Ralstons radio live show, um how much does he really know about what is happening in the mobile industry i wonder?

Come on Telecom........how hard can it be to acknowledge you backed the wrong horse, its time to make the decision to run with a better technology.

I still haven’t heard when they are likely to make the big announcement........anyone?????

Yes it is very frustrating, surely they have not just started thinking about it.

The more time they waste, the more customers especially business customers go to Vodafone etc.
