One odd thing (that 99% of people won't care about) is the power conenctor is an odd size.  We have a PC power supply with a bunch of 12V plugs powering most things but this one does not fit the two sizes that fit everything else (from Cisco to Huawei

 

Power bricks can be an absolute PIA. When we got fibre installed, we had an electrician install a double power point where we wanted the ONT and Router in the office wardrobe. Now this was a standard HPM double power point but I still had to use a vertical double adapter to lift one of the power bricks up as they both would not sit next to each other.

 

Ikea also has very large 3 pin power bricks for their lighting systems.

 

At least Apple has got it right why can not other electronic manufactures do the same ⁉️

 

That's why as an electrician I always recommend horizontal outlets - usually gets around this

or have I interpreted this wrong and you have a horizontal power point and it still didnt work out

Plenty of Vodafone Ultra Hubs on Trade me for only a few dollars - they have 4x4 AC wifi too and get they same speed if thats what you are after.

Is there any option to swap the HG659b with this? Number of devices limit raise is appealing...

 

I'll speak to the products folk about this, at this stage only faults would be replaced out. or new journeys

 

Obviously we can't say lets replace all the HG659bs...

 

I only just upgraded to HG659b from HG630b when I changed plans to Unplan Entertainment Fibre 100 on 03/05/2019 - Aw not fair 😞

In addition to my post on the other thread about Netflix, I am looking to rejoin Spark Fibre Broadband after being overseas for a year.

I would be looking for the Broadband service to be activated on 5th November.

Am I guaranteed to get this new modem? How do I make sure I only get the new modem? Should I sign up through the 'New to Spark Broadband' option on this page you posted (https://www.spark.co.nz/getmore/spark-smart-modem) to ensure I get the new modem? Or should I just sign up through my existing MySpark profile (which has no accounts currently associated with it)?

Would just like to chime in with my experience with the Smart Modem.

The reason I wanted the new Smart Modem was to see if it solved a 2 year long problem with 5GHz WiFi on my HG659b.

I had 2 WiFi devices on 5GHz, they used Static IP Addresses and the 1 on 2.4GHz used DHCP.

After some time the 5GHz WiFi would just decide to stop working. The SSID was still there but if I tried to rejoin it on either device it would say that the passcode was incorrect. Strangely I could disconnect and then join the 2.4Ghz WiFi using the same passcode but going back to 5GHz would still say the passcode was incorrect. The only way I could solve the problem was to Power OFF - ON the HG659b and then my devices would again work on 5GHz (I didn't have to do anything as they would automatically rejoin). The most annoying thing about this problem was that because the 5GHz WiFi was still there, neither device would detect the loss of WiFi and automatically switch over to using Mobile Data, that meant no Emails or anything else that used data. I had to regularly check if I had an Internet connection or not.

So I changed all my devices over to 2.4GHz and I never had any issues. I did swap my HG659b with my neighbour and it did the same thing. Spark Helpdesk wanted me to factory reset the router and devices, of course I had tried resetting the router, I wasn't willing to reset both devices.

Fast-forward to the Smart Modem......... and it has been working great, 5GHz is rock solid, throughput has increased and at better range. I did some tests downloading large linux.img files through bittorrent ramming lots of connections and it was also rock solid and fast, so far I'm very impressed.

Now you knew there was going to be a BUT..... The File Sharing feature is using SMB 1.0, Windows turned this OFF ages ago so if you want to use File Sharing you have to reinstall the SMB 1.0 Client again. Hopefully A Spark firmware update in the future will update to SMB 2.0 - 3.0

Hey thanks for that, with all the Internet doom about SMB 1.0 an upgrade would help all customers. Oh you might want to give the Spark Helpdesk a heads-up about this too.

BTW... I use it as a Network File Server for when the NAS is sleeping, no sense in waking up a power hungry NAS just to get a .conf file.
