Telecom is tonight again having trouble with its XT cellular network.

Telecom posted on its Twitter account at about 9pm tonight: "We had problems with a small number of XT sites. This seems to be easing."

Telecom XT customers from around the country have posted complaints on Twitter and online forums, and emailed Stuff.co.nz about problems with the network tonight, including being unable to send text messages, and hearing a busy signal when trying to make a call.

Telecom spokesman Mark Watts was as yet unable to confirm what areas were without service.

Be assured we are aware of the performance issues some customers are experiencing. Tech teams are working to resolve this.

hamish225: tell them to do their job better.

That was rude and uncalled for. Those kinds of faults are not there because people don't do their jobs.

Why would Telecom have any interest in keeping us updated, after you post this here?

Consider this a warning.

None of this is Telecom's fault -- at least the last two outages were not. If anyone is to blame it would be Alcatel-Lucent, who are in fact helping Telecom fund the compensation package.

Obviously I'm not sure what's causing this issue, but stuff happens. Quite frankly I prefer my $20 free credit over 3 days with patchy coverage.

I dont think "do their job better" is a good comment?

I am pretty sure it would go without saying that telecom would want the best possible outcome from any incident, big or small and that doing their job at the best they can would be the main focus point?

Yes they are the ones working to fix it. No, it's not your fault. But it's not their fault either.

And they are working on it. We don't know yet what's the problem, if it's related to previous problems or not. So until then, saying "tell them to do their job better" is just bad.

By the tone of your reply I think you didn't understand my warning.

I wonder if you've ever fixed something for someone only to find that the next day it develops another unrelated fault, could be a piece of tech gear or a car or whatever - it's frustrating for everyone but it doesn't mean that someone hasn't done their job properly on the hardware side - could be software or a whole range of things.

The fact is that when you've got technology you've got the potential for failure, let's cut the boys (and girls) at the front line a bit of slack

I agree 100% with JohnK, the poor techs would be under enormous pressure from Telecom management at all levels to get the XT Network back to normal operations.

Official Statement unedited by me:
Telecom advised customers this evening of intermittent disruption to SMS service on its XT network since early evening.

The disruption appears to have predominantly affected SMS (texting) services, with a much smaller level of disruption to voice services on the network.

Around 20% of SMS messages may have failed at the first sending attempt.

The issue are related to very high levels of traffic.

Telecom continues to monitor the situation closely and will update customers as new information comes to hand.

Yeah must be hard - no one wants these faults. He's doing well.
