I had the same problems as you did with Telecom (VDSL). I found that streaming to my laptop, desktop, iPad, or ATV3 was fine, but streaming to my PS3 and WDLive was poor and constantly buffering (it always stopped at 25% for some strange reason!)

Happy to report that now I am on BigPipe VDSL I have been streaming stuff via my PS3 (and PS4) in Super HD with no issues.
We have reports of other customers doing the same, and I am yet to hear of anybody having issues with streaming on BigPipe.
Definitely keen to hear how your experience goes when you switch to us.

So Big Pipe is significantly better than standard Telecom VDSL?

For the most part you can expect it will be largely the same as any other VDSL. You likely won't see huge differences between VDSL on any providers to be honest.

However, it does seem that (somehow) we have avoided whatever it is that causes Netflix to be slow over PSN for some people.

From a network point of view, we are as separate from Telecom as any other ISP in NZ is. Orcon, Slingshot, Vodafone etc etc.

I believe this must be routing issue between Telecom and PSN..

I assume you have logged a call (yeah that old chestnut!) with the Broadband Helpdesk on 0800 225598 and got a case number for your issue?

It could be peering or some other issue, but without people logging cases we wouldn't know.

I'll chat with the network folks when I am back next week.

Can you please have a look and chase up this 231216381067 - although I am moving now with BigPipe but yeah, would still be great if this can be fixed.

I just read other forums and looks like the cause of psn bufferingon netflix is because of telecom transparent proxy.

Telecom is there any way you can disable proxy on per request?

Bigpipe are you using transparent proxy?

Just asked and this could be answers??

Im now connected with BigPipe and viola! no more netflix buffering!!! all good now with all my devices including ps3!

also, my international latency decreases 15ms which is good!

so definitely a problem with telecom! thanks to BigPipe for quick support! although I got a small hiccup with chorus again but all good.

Netflix playback is set to HD. PS3 connected via ethernet. using Technicolor 589 VDSL. and got 22/3 (up/down).
Q: what's your modem and link speed to US?

At the moment I'm using the same modem as you, although I have been trying a few different ones over the last few weeks. I was streaming netflix last night no issues, sorry I didn't check my speed to the states last night (I'm at work now), but previously when I checked it was about 9Mbps I think. I assume you got your speeds back to front up there. should be 22 down, 3 up. Although 3 up sounds fairly slow for VDSL, even when you are on the margin for distance.

So just a couple of questions that might be really obvious:

Was the content you were streaming actually available in HD? Not all content on Netflix is. A lot of TV shows and movies, especially the older ones, only go up to 480p anyway, even on PS3.

Did you try lots of different bits of content over the 15 mins, or let one piece run for a while? Netflix runs ABR (adaptive bitrate) where it start the stream in low res and then over the course of time gradually increases it. Sometimes it can take up to 5 minutes to get up to HD, although it is usually quicker than that. So if you were trying several pieces of content over that 15 minutes it's possible you didn't give it long enough to get up to HD.

Were you streaming or downloading anything else at the same time that might be taking up a lot of bandwidth? (e.g. downloading a game patch, torrenting)

* Yes, the tv/movies im trying last night was all HD (House of cards, scandal, Olympus has fallen, MI3) I did watch them about 30-1 hr and almost 2am still getting flat 480.

* no one is using internet last night except me as all kids and wife already in bed. started to view around 10pm until 2am but no go.. getting only flat 480. not even attempting to go 720..

this morning, I tried testing getflix.com.au hoping I could get at least 720 - it was pretty fast that would start 240,288,384,480 then stops there..

so something is limiting my connection to 480 using PS3.

tested my speedtest and getting 7Mb from US (10am).

Im now clueless, what could be the reason.. was thinking maybe my attenuation is high? (my upstream) - do you think this would make difference if I go back to ADSL? (Bigpipe).

btw, I even uninstalled and reset my netflix account on ps3... but no go..

If you were still with Telecom you can request a Static IP, and in the notes ask to get a Static IP address in the Proxy Bypass pool.

3mb up when you get 22mb down is a bit unusual. I would expect more like 5-6mb up with 22mb down... So I think there may be a distance or wiring issue. if you were still with Telecom I would say get your line tested and wiring checked.

See what bigpipe come up with.

will check with BigPipe if they can help on checking my line re this.

btw, at 1230pm I could now stream 1080SuperHD - tested on 2 movies. But I am using Getflix.com.au now (was Unblock-us) will give a try tonight again.

so Im guessing this is now timing issue as I read from US forums that netflix has some network issues.. but will see tonight again...
