When did Telecom back the wrong technology?

It's in Telecom's interests to have both GSM and WCDMA networks. Going with a nationwide 850+2100 WCDMA network with no GSM fallback would not have necessarily been a smart move due to the big $$ that can be made from providing GSM inbound roaming.

I don't think it would have that much impact for several reasons:
1. 3G handsets are now much more main stream
2. 2100 is the most common 3G standard
3. most of their inbound roaming will be in the main centers

So yes, they would miss out on some inbound roaming outside of the main centres, and a smaller amount within main centres; but only in the short term. A year or two down the track and this will be much leas relevant.

So which would be greater:
1. The additional cost of building the 2G part of the network?
or
2. The missed inbound revenue over the next 1-2 years?

I'd guess the build cost would be greater than any lost inbound revenue; but that's just my thoughts, so open to other opinions.

Telecom backed the wrong technology when they decided to invest 100's of millions of dollars into GSM, a 17 year old technology which hasn't had a major development since EDGE was introduced in 2003. The main use of GSM is voice, it has a poor use of spectrum, channel allocation, Rx sensitivity, and actual cell coverage is limited to 35km radius due to timing issues around the G.703 2MB/s E1 standard.

Ericsson's UMTS850 tested cell coverage of 160km in Australia, when they built the Next G network for Telstra.

The WCDMA2100 is a patchwork network at best that suffers from poor propagation /penetration and will only be launched in the Major 3 centers. This will solve the roaming issue as most new handsets have WCDMA2100 capabilities.

The 2100 technology was a good choice but it wasn't a national wide decision. This is what GSM was. Wrong move in my opinion.

Nokia is talking about stopping the manufacture of CDMA handsets, and the same will happen of GSM I am certain of that, the only GSM handset you'll be able to buy is the low cost no frills $69 model built for 3rd world countries.

It is due over the next few days, hopefully tomorrow actually. Although its actually a given that wcdma 850 is happening its good to have the confirmation officially and i then some of us can start to plan for a huge year next year.

Word on the street is an annoucement this week.. 850 GSM being canned cards ripped out and replaced with 850 UMTS. It's a rather fundamental change in terms of a business model for the mobile business.

Yup, voice is no longer the key, mobile broadband will be.

I hear that huge back haul improvement is occuring as well, fibre to all sites.

with no LLU enforcement Telecom and Vodafone with its new 900mhz network can really do some stuff with broadband in rural areas and semi urban.

Then the femtocell option comes in and providing solutions there for home phone and broadband.

Some serious doors are opening over the next few years.

Yea, very smart move if Telecom ditch their GSM plans. Will hurt them a little in the short term, but they're definitely making a great long term decision.

Telecom mobile ETA mid-09

Telecom has confirmed that its new mobile network will not be available to retail customers this year. The company was originally expected to launch the new $300 million dollar network around November to cash in on the traditionally busy Christmas period.

It will now consist of a phased launch with some inbound roaming and customer experience piloting this year and the full marketing launch in the first half of 2009.

Dr Reynolds also announced that the next month (from August 8) would be spent reviewing the company's new network rollout, and is looking at extending its 3G network nationally by implementing it in two radio spectrum bands, rather than one.

This will give it added compatibility with international 3G networks, and greater rural reach. Currently, the network build is to utilise the 2100MHz radio spectrum band using WDCMA technology.

The topic of discussion is whether to add 850MHz WCDMA, which is what AT&T in the US and Telstra in Australia have launched.

Telecom's GSM network is now available as an inbound-roaming option on my T-Mobile Germany SIM. It's a pity that no retail rollout as yet.
