nzpossum: But what were talking about here is a sudden and unexpected 10x reduction in speed right across the board. This kind of throttling is not acceptable, even if people know they are on a plan where speeds might be slower during busy times.

Big Time is managed 24/7, it seems to be a common misconception that it is only managed during peak times and that during offpeak there are no throttles at all.

Just to be clear again, we are talking about HTTP downloads from one-click hosting sites like Rapidshare and Megaupload, right?

Cymro,
I would imagine you are not on this package or you would understand the real issues here.
This was a service we have all been generally happy with, but it has changed over the last few days.  Traffic shaping on sharing protocols was frustrating, but as you say, expected.
What is not expected is the absolute throttling of ALL http traffic, both the traffic to any international site, meaning pages are not being displayed and ANY download being limited to at most 100 kbps.
By any definition this is a Broadband service, NOT a 56kbps dial up service.
I have logged 2 calls with Telecom, they admit there is a known issue now, but they have no idea how long it will take to "fix".  On Stuff, the below article explains that this could be due to "recent traffic management software upgrades"......Right, "could be"!

http://www.stuff.co.nz/business/industries/3570623/Crawling-Big-Time-annoys-Telecom-customers

I simply want what I had back!  I hope Telecom sorts this out rather quickly, because right now my gmail is almost unusable and I cannot download almost anything from anywhere!  Never mind if it is considered a valid candidate for traffic shaping!

i think telecoms fixin it... ive got 2 downloads jumping from 100-300kb/s each (still nowhere near max). Yesterday i was only getting 10-50. So it seems that telecom are improving the situtation to say the least; that or everyones whining so much im the only one using traffic  Laughing lol

I tried Big Time earlier this year, but changed off it because of gaming issues (which I expected and accepted it wasn't for me) rather than downloads, which I was pretty happy with (but then I grew up in an era when 14.4k dialup was a luxury).

The point I was trying to get across is that it's unrealistic to expect fast speeds and unlimited data for $60, especially when you talk about downloading files. If as you say there are problems with general web pages loading then thats a valid complaint, but I'm pretty sure 99% of the complaints here and on GP forums are in relation to downloading tv shows and warez from one-click hosts, and those complaints have all sprung up in the last couple of days suggesting Telecom might have closed loopholes in their management policy.

And only 10 mins after i post the speed gooess doooownn.

And Cymro, the problem with everyone is that telecom specifies that the line speed itself is not capped. So that means when downloading through a manager the trafficking system isnt allowed to restrict the maximum line speed, just make it harder to reach. We cant expect ping, we cant expect 1mb/s single threaded downloads (microsoft.com excluded) but we can expect that the line is not capped. You really have to have used Big Time for a while to understand.

I really hope they fix this soon. Currently trying to download ImgBurn software from Softpedia at 17.6 KB/s WITH a download manger. The download has timed out twice. In retrospec I was able to grab stuff from Softpedia at 700-800 KB/s a couple of days ago.

My speeds have gotten worse. Now maxing out at around 25-30 Kb/s using the best download manager. What is the minimum speed to be considered broadband anyone. This has to be a glitch otherwise they are looking at another huge legal fiasco like what they had with the Go Large plan.

Nspossum, they have CONFIRMED to me that it's a severe technical problem, and I garuntee you that they will be heading for another legal fiasco such as what happened with the dreaded GO LARGE plan.

'Big Time' should be now called "Small Time - DIAL UP SPEED FOR A BROADBAND PRICE!!"

Hang on, how is having multiple threads adding up to the total line speed any different than having one thread maxing it out? (theoretically)
You would still be consuming the same amount of bandwidth wouldn't you?

The same thing is happening to me 1/30th of my original speeds is just not acceptable.

Trafficking, is essentially tunnelling a connection. Imagine cars going through a tunnel, a 2 lane tunnels gonna let more through then a 1 lane tunnel. This can be comparible to big time but instead of it being a solid tunnel, its flexible. When a user is multi tasking on the net (eg 2 pages loading at once) the tunnelling in big time expands to accomodate the more incoming connections. Multi-Threading is essentially the same, the computer is requesting more than 1 connection to a server thus the tunnel expands. Im sorry to all the techies that actually know how the system works but thats just my perspective and how i put it into context. Im not exactly sure why single threaded downloads cant reach max line speed on normal connections but my guess is that microsoft servers have more torque or something at thier end pushing data through.

Anyway, if the connection was capped at a speed my 'Tunnel' would stay the solid tunnel.

Hope i clarified a bit

Oh well, now, since I don't need the speed anymore I can get interleaving turned off.

Cymro: In all honesty I think you have pretty unrealistic expectations.

For $60 you are getting as much data as you can use (probably many hundreds of GB) but the trade-off is that the speed to some of that data is managed, especially in regards to File sharing which is what you are complaining about.

Alternatively you could be spending $60 and only getting 20GB, but no speeds would be artificially reduced.

You seem to want unlimited data and no restrictions on speed, that kind of service isn't available in NZ and for very good reasons.

I never mentioned bloody file sharing!! HTTP is not filesharing.
56-64 is NOT fair 24/7!!!!!

get your facts right.

Downloading files via HTTP is quite blatently file sharing, Rapidshare, megaupload etc. are all file sharing sites, to try and claim otherwise would be a little silly to say the least.

If you are complaining that general HTTP webpages are being throttled then thats a valid complaint, but that doesn't seem to be the case.

They were already throttling speeds from those particular filesharing sites without throttling HTTP downloads etc, fool.

Now they are throttling most HTTP transfers (downloads and webpages etc)
I've already had my computer n00b family complain bout slow loading sites etc.

And we're not expecting fast speeds. Just reasonable speeds.
With out downloading multiple threads I would only be able to download under 8kB/s most likely.
Which is in fact the equivalent of dial-up
