Yep, I think I'm done with Telecom. It's not like they're cheap either. I'm moving soon, I think I'll be closing my account for good this time rather than getting reconnected to them. Pity, they were really reliable up until a couple of months ago.

bnapi: wikipedia is so so slow. facebook images are not loading again. I signed up to telecom broadband before they implemented a proxy cache so contractually did they have the right to add me into the proxy cache after i signed up?


I used Telecom broadband for 4 years before I was forced to switch to Vodafone because of the cache thing.

Not sure. Look what happened with their usenet server back in the day. They retired it - even though a small number of customers used it.

Is it even ethical to implement such a cache? I mean, I am requesting HTTP traffic from server x, but it seems to me that that this traffic is being hijacked and a cached copy comes from the cache instead of server x (presuming a copy is already in said cache). Disclaimer: This is only how it seems to me - please correct me if my understand of any of this is wrong. 

When we pay for plans by the gigabyte, I expect to have direct access to servers via HTTP.

Caches are a generally a good thing, for an example consider your web browser...

When you go to a page your web browser on your machine caches static resources (css, javascript, imagery) for a period of time so that you don't have to re-download them every time.  

You would definitely notice slower web browsing if these were downloaded from the server every time. 

A caching web proxy for http/www at the ISP just takes things a step further adding an layer of caching in the ISP's network.  It's supposed to improve performance and lower latency.

Additionally most ISP's have have google/youtube servers in their data centre so that you can use those services at fast national speed and low latency.  Many also have akamai servers which are used to deliver windows updates and drivers for AMD and Nvidia.

I'm on Telecom at home and I"m not seeing any issues, if it's a regional or intermittent issue only affecting some people they will need people to report it so they can narrow it down.


Basically..
If the Telecom cache is causing problems for you best thing you can do is report the issue to Telecom, the quickest way to do that is via their online contact us form

Wikipedia is going like an absolute dog for me, as is FB.
Using my Vodem, Wikipedia goes a lot faster.

Steam web pages (viewed within the steam client) are taking much longer to respond and they load up much slower than they used too.

Thanks Ragnor. I had presumed it was just about saving bandwidth for the ISP. :-)

Bandwidth from a cache is only slightly cheaper than international transit when you take into account hardware costs, licensing, engineers time to maintain/configure it.

Cache is a good thing IF that works properly.

My expereience to report the problem, for real.

1) Ring them and the tier-1 technician answers, explained the problem, no solution. Passed to tier-2. Tier-2 is in contact. Talking to them a few times. nothing resolved. Said they would ring back.

2) No reponse after a few days. Same problem. Ring them again, tier-1 answers, go through the same process, explain everything. Eventually passed to tier-2. Said they have passed the problem to some other guys (can't remember now) and awaiting response. Said would ring me back.

3) OK. Wait wait wait, another 2,3 weeks. I am impatient so emailed them. Someone is in contact and then called me to go through the process which was done before (including DNS, trace routes etc etc). Nothing resolved. Said will pass to other guys again (can't remember exactly of who those guys are) to verify their network.

4) Then wait wait wait wait, another 4,5 weeks. Emailed them again. no response. Ring them, tier-1 asnwered, asked the same questions etc etc. This time I just gave up, I assumed the result is the same.

Eventually I hired paid proxy servers in the market for the rest of the broadband life and have ended with Telecom in March.

I was also told that the problem might be just solely on myself at the time since they said they've done everything to check. Now this post does point out that the problem does exist across other their customers and I hope they do look into it.

Emailling them seemed to work, they acknowledged there was a know issue with some users and they asked for my IP, which I gave. So see what happens next. Response was pretty fast as well. So here's hoping this continues...

I get the same problem with Engadget and the slow/no image loading on Facebook.

Some days recently I just have not been able to connect to anything at all. At that stage (and I don't really know what a DNS is or where to find it) I messed around with the firefox proxy settings - switching from none to auto to system and back.

It would be great if there was a fix for this.
