For $60 you are getting as much data as you can use (probably many hundreds of GB) but the trade-off is that the speed to some of that data is managed, especially in regards to File sharing which is what you are complaining about.

Alternatively you could be spending $60 and only getting 20GB, but no speeds would be artificially reduced.

You seem to want unlimited data and no restrictions on speed, that kind of service isn't available in NZ and for very good reasons.

I never mentioned bloody file sharing!! HTTP is not filesharing.

Downloading files via HTTP is quite blatently file sharing, Rapidshare, megaupload etc. are all file sharing sites, to try and claim otherwise would be a little silly to say the least.

If you are complaining that general HTTP webpages are being throttled then thats a valid complaint, but that doesn't seem to be the case.

They were already throttling speeds from those particular filesharing sites without throttling HTTP downloads etc, fool.

Now they are throttling most HTTP transfers (downloads and webpages etc)
I've already had my computer n00b family complain bout slow loading sites etc.

Yep, you got it one dude - they were throttling those file-sharing sites, now the c__ts are throttling
everything!!!

'Big Time' should be now called "Small Time - DIAL UP SPEED FOR A BROADBAND PRICE!!"

I doubt legal action will be taken.
Otherwise it would be all over the news, which is isn't

Here's an interesting post from someone over at the gpfoums site

Guys, i've just tried downloading stuff from a non big time connection (my folks house up in AKL) and the 100K cap is on this plan as well... wtf is going on?

Edit: also a RS download hovers around 30-40 KB/s so this sheds a little more light on the whole situation.

Maybe there is hope if it's affecting everyone

I thought this would be the case. I was going to try another connection 2moro but I wont need to now. It really doesn't add up to a technical fault

Hi All,

I've been experiencing download issues with Telecom (I'm on their Big Time plan) since approx March 10th and have been in correspondance with Telecom Support via email since that time... they have acknowledged to me that there does indeed appear to be an "international" connectivity issue - although they claim (again) that the issue is actually external to their network.... the original problem I had was explained by a major international event (so far as internet connectivity is concerned) in the Arab Emirates which was resolved after a few days and my connection went back to normal before more recently falling back down again.

They haven't said what the problem is this time, but have (apparently) accepted my complaint and the tracerts I sent them and as mentioned, have stated that there does appear to be a problem external to their own network but have forwarded my complaint on in order that it be investigated and resolved.

To those of you suggesting it's only related to file downloads, you're simply wrong.

I now live in New Zealand but I (along with my colleagues in the UK) run a UK business... over the past two weeks or so, I can't maintain VPN connections, Remote Desktop Connections time out frequently... I get timeouts when downloading emails from my UK hosted Pop3 Email Accounts, accessing my company (and all related) UK hosted websites is temperamental to say the very least... AND like other users of this forum, my GMail account will now rarely load and when downloading ANYTHING (that I've tried) from a website external to NZ... via HTTP, my previous transfer rates of up to 700k/s are now sub 100k/s.

However, ALL (that I've tried) locally (NZ) hosted websites work absolutely fine!

This isn't acceptable in anyone's book and I also hope that it is as Telecom have explained to me, a technical problem that can be resolved soon.

the problem seems to be fix at my end ive just downloaded 2 videos off youtube and got 1.3mb per sec and downloaded an app of download.com and got 997kbps so it looks like my speed is back to nominal

NOPE, not fixed this end. I'm in Blenheim. Just tried to download a 40MB file on www.download.com and could not get higher than 23KB/s using a bloody download manager!!!

there is only about 3 sites ive been to that have still download slow for me with is the only 3 sites i usely download from :(

Not fixed on my end either, still maxing out at around 80Kb/s using multi threading. I think Telecom was probably lying when they said it was a technical error (wouldn't be the first time). The fact that they have recently installed new traffic management software as described in recent stuff.co.nz article says it all. Also the fact that traffic seems to be micro-managed with pin point precision is another sign it's no mistake. Sites like youtube are still blazing fast while others are extremely slow. I plan on calling Telecom myself sometime today and i encourage everybody to do the same. Lets these bastards know what you think of them.
