The other problem is the excessive shaping on single connection transfers, single connection FTP/HTTP, yet if you use a download manager or bittorrent for example and crank a ton of connections you can get a decent speed.

eg: Single connection download from international FTP you might get 5-10 KB/s, yet crank a well seeded torrent and you can do 120-180KB/s in peak time. It's a bit silly.

You can see single connections being shaped to buggery in a bunch of "general" web use situations like gmail (already mentioned), trying to open Steam (takes forever), team based voip like Ventrillo where you connect to a server (5 KB/s just isn't enough).

i actually tend to believe that they've fixed the issue with memory leak w/e was there. i don't have packet loss anymore compared to the first 2 weeks when the problem occur. maybe one of their traffic exchange server went down so they redirect traffic from certain regions through one gateway and that slows down everyone. or maybe its got something to do with how they changed the throttling rules.
on my end particularly i have normal connection with about 200kb/s http downloads and about the same for p2p downloads (haven't checked in a coupla days).
i also tend to believe that some people were abusing the use of encrypted channels ssh/https to download large amounts of data and that been noticed resulted changes in how this kind of traffic is throttled right now. last night i checked ssh before and after 2am. nothing has changed. i kept getting timeouts and connection loss.

Agreed, they need to fix the https for things like email, internet banking, etc; and also give a bit more speed to single connection downloads-even 30kb/s would be nice, not this 2-5kb/s rubbish. Not sure how easy or hard any of that would be to implement/change but hey, they designed the rules so can surely change them to suit.

This. If there's a large file I need to download, I have to torrent it if I want it done quickly.

Which is exactly the opposite of what it should be.

just hit 2:30 and the lag in games and ventrillo went insane. was getting a ping of 30,000+ in vent and was warping in combat arms

Yeah the same here. no games/online radio/vent etc. torrent is going at 200kb/s which is pretty sad. why cant i play but can download stuff...

You think a torrent going at 200 is bad? Its supposed to be like 5 during peak hours and 200+ off peak. I don't download during the day because there are 5 other people on the network. But when I can, I usually max out my line. But I can't talk to my friends in australia over Ventrilo, let alone my friends in the states.

I don't know why I'm still typing. I know why its so slow, its that global gateway. An update would be nice :)

I'm in the same boat, I regularly play world of warcraft and other online games. During the night I can get a steady 800kb/s on my download manager, but during the day most connections just time out, and in the evening good luck doing anything.

I had ventrilo pings of up to 28,000 making it unuseable, and this is not exclusive for the night. Doing ping tests came back with regularly 10-20% packet loss everywhere I tested it, and I can't even use SSH tunneling services in my games because I don't have the bandwidth, something I never ran into before while using the old go large plan.

I am so frustrated with the terrible internet in this country, I'm beginning to consider moving somewhere else.

Are national sites fine? National downloads?
Anyone connecting to a work VPN or anything? Does telecom shape national?

Telecom shapes everything on BigTime as far as I am aware. I can max my line when downloading national mirrors everywhere. I connect to KiwiLAN regularly which is a VPN connection in the Auckland CBD and I can ping that at 8 to 10.

Australia is also good. Anything further, depending on the time of day...You are wasting your time.

All that said, the traffic management is under continuous review and if it actually turns out to be the rules or the traffic management box that is genuinely slowing normal (non P2P / RS type DL / non gaming etc) traffic to 22bytes/sec than I'm sure that changes will be made.

This continuous review is obviously not occurring on a basis regularly enough as to avoid the many problems people face here. The simple fact of the matter is that people like me don't expect rocket speeds, we don't expect perfect high speed 24/7 - we're on a flat rate plan that is traffic shaped. The simple reality is that 5KB/s for a download is pathetic and no amount of hand wringing will change that fact.

I have laid a formal complaint with the telecommunications ombudsman but it is a waste of time because they can't do a single thing when it comes to the actual speed - I was rung up by a telecom representative with an attitude giving me lip over how much I downloaded. it is as though Telecom expects people to pay a subscription, run the service on the cheap by providing hardly any bandwidth then hoping like crazy that the traffic shaping will solve all the other problems and then complain when people do use the service to its full potential - how dare those customers use their internet connection! For the clueless among those at telecom - I had such a high download rate because I had to restart my download over and over and over and over and over and over again - because the download kept timing out.

Edit: Btw, traffic shaping does effect domestic traffic; I can't download off citylink higher than 5KB/s some days, Wicks (ftp.wicks.co.nz) which has linux mirrors, same situation.

6:23am and I'm getting 5% normal speed. Throttled or globalgateway issue still? I really wish they would tell us.

It's nothing to do with the global gateway - I got sick of the speeds so changed to the pro plan and guess what my speeds are now impressive, check the screen shots earlier compared to this over 1mbps
