unlike the XT issues, the media hasn't picked up on this yet.

Are you under the impression that New Zealand is a tech-rich country? LOL. The party in charge doesn't see us as anything other than primary producers. If you can't dig a hole or farm a cow you're probably just a minor part of the economy that doesn't matter. And you don't need internets for hole digging!

Oh, and yeah, my internet traffic is being so horribly shaped I can hardly keep a connection in EVE Online. This is a new thing and isn't to do with my Internet usage, as far as I can tell.. Gah.

My account has just switched over to Broadband Pro; everything is 'teh snappy', fast downloads, fast uploads, fast connection to the exchange - its fast all around. I think the best one can conclude is if you're having problems you're better off moving than trying to 'fight the system'.

Also noticed the throttling on Facebook tonight. No big deal there, but Rapidshare running at 17 kb/s has me frustrated.

For now I'm ok with only being able to download between 2am and 8am, but I think if you want to use the internet for anything else, you're better off on another plan - at least they are legally obliged to fix speed issues on the other plans.

Another morning, another offpeak period, another day of 8% download speeds during that period.

I get faster speeds during peak times.

It actually gives me the impression now that the shaping has been screwed royally. Torrents, no probs, they motor along nicely 300kb+

Regular downloads such as drivers from HP barely make 10kb/s or Facebook, gmail, youtube, etc etc etc are so slow and unresponsive that I think at these stages dialup would be an improvement. I have even given up on Internet banking during peak times because to log into it takes a good 2 minutes and then it times out just after you get in just to add injury to the situation.

Tbh I don't think telecom could shape a cake let alone traffic.

Why aren't I changing plans or ISP's? because I am fed up paying huge money for crap service when I can come to Telecom, get guaranteed crap service and only pay a small fee.

As for the common statement of ISP's not putting a guarantee on their service offered? its a cop out so that they don't have to spend money upgrading and supplying a service that meets the standard of decent internet that 90% of the western world gets. I'm afraid ISP's have dug themselves into a position where they can provide the basic minimum service to their customers and not get sued or taken to the cleaners through the law of the land for poor service.

Maybe its time for the likes of Virgin etc to move into NZ and show us all how easy it is to provide a internet service that actually functions and can be successfully called "Broadband" rather than the slightly upgraded dial-up that we get now.

I'm sorry Telecom, but stop making excuses and actually do something, or stand aside and let someone else do it. I'm sick of CSR's either playing dumb or being hog-tired by management when it comes to actually explaining to customers whats going on and when its going to be fixed. I've even had a CSR hang up on me because I caught him out on his knowledge, Not a nice experience. I actually get faster speeds and better internet access using an XT T-Stick than I do from a landline, if it wasn't for the excessive data charges on that I would happily use it 24/7

Big Time = The amount of time waiting for things to happen.

Remember that they don't need to, no company needs to guarantee their level of service, there is an implied guarantee in the Consumer Guarantees Act which the service providers can't get out of. Its just that very few people have ever challenged them on it because of NZers usual not wanting to complain, or being treated poorly by big companies (usually the power companies). And those that do challenge them usually win without it going to court so it never makes the news, as the companies know they are in the wrong.

These of course are general statements, Im not saying that this has happened with Telecom. But they will be held to the reasonable standard of service required under the CGA if anybody did take action.

Yes I am aware of that, even a guarantee of minimum speed would be better than nothing.

They've been selling it as a broadband service, and have, over the years, shown the difference between broadband and dialup. So it would not be unreasonable to complain when the speed is slower than dialup. Personally I think that a minimum speed of 1mb/s is reasonable, but it would be up to the courts to decide, but it never gets far enough for that to happen.

Have you even tried comparing it to the other flat rate DSL plans from other providers?? What guaranteed minimum speed do they give?

Cheers - N

Yes agree 1Mb would be more than enough. At present I can start a fully Legal Torrent file and download it no problems at nearly 290Kb/s but I'm trying to download drivers for my HP laptop, and at present its crawling along at 1.2Kb/s

Do you have any idea what 1mbit/sec actually would cost if it was a guaranteed minimum?

My estimate from the latest public figures I have seen would be probably over $250/month. Possibly well over that if parts of the access network need to be upgraded to guarantee that level of performance...

Cheers - N

No I haven't and tbh I'm not even sure if any ISP's do guarantee a minimum speed. But shouldn't a provider who sells an internet service be required to provide a min standard? we are getting it now with Phone companies, where a min standard is starting to be put in place as well as Power companies who must maintain a min standard. We already see such standards coming into play with Hosting companies and web content companies.

Tbh I'm not even sure why local traffic should be included in shaping considering 70% of traffic in NZ is sourced from outside of NZ.
