AKLWestie:
pollock: Just got my VDSL installed,

Is the modems GUI suppose to be really sluggish?

Mine is the same, the GUI is very slow and it is painful when I need to change a bunch of settings.

On my old adsl tompson was the same problem. I think it's normal for this routers.

Sorry about my English guys :>

Yeah, the Thomson routers tend to have very sluggish web GUIs.

I've had VDSL for about a month now and something really interesting (to me at least) has just happened.  My latency has dropped right down to the lowest levels it has ever been in my life.  Wellington to Palmerston North is just 7ms where as a few days ago it was just under 30ms.

Wellington to Sydney just 40ms - last week it was closer to 60ms.  This is good news given that Battlefield 4 gaming servers for the Xbox One or Playstation 4 will be located in Sydney.

Amazing!

I believe this is what happened to Kim Dotcom when the GCSB were watching him. Have you been up to no good?

kawaii: Hi,

Just looking at signing up but something strange last night; I put my address in and it said that only ADSL was available yet 2 nights before I checked the same address and it said that VDSL was available. Anyone from Telecom able to give me a heads up on the situation - is there a bug in the address checker?

Also, just noticed that on the contact page there is no option if you have a skinny mobile number starting with 0204.

That's happening to me too.

I'm in kiwi rd on Aucklands north shore. The ISP'S address checkers often show kiwi rd twice. Once in Stanley Point and once in Devonport. The chorus one has me in Stanley Point but varies whether VDSL or ADSL is available every time I use it.

The chorus map is filled in with different colours, but is there a map showing the actual cabinets? Or is there a way I can find out which cabinet or exchange I'm connected to?

I'm currently with Vodafone on ADSL2.

If I sign up for VDSL with Telecom, but it turns out I can't get it, have I committed to Telecom anyway?

Nope, as I understand it you'd be rolled back to your previous setup (and therefor provider) as Chorus won't sign off the Job if you're too far etc :-)

I have had VDSL running for a couple of weeks now and I have learnt a few things that may be of interest.

I was with Vodafone on ADSL2 Plus AnnexA getting 6.55 / 0.9 Mbps max.
I checked the telecom network data map and I was in zone for VDSL (about 200m to cabinet).
I signed up for the $125 150GB plan and got the VDSL modem and install.
I am now getting 20 / 10 Mbps (after a week of VDSL tuning) which is fairly average.

The Chorus install guy did a fault check and verified that my line has 5 branches on it.
He explained that my line does not just go from our house to the cabinet 200m away, it also goes down 5 other streets as well (maybe 2-3km in total).

In summary line branching:

  • Kills any chance of extreme VDSL speed.

  • Was a common practice by telecom.

  • Is uneconomic to fix as the joints are sealed in lead and buried.

  • Wait for FTTH rollout.

l43a2:
day one of VDSL install about 700m from cabinet

Excellent, I'm about 650m so hopefully similar results.

Two weeks later after my proposed install date and still waiting Chorus to upgrade roadside cabinet :(

Something on my VDSL connection seems to have changed overnight. I'm exactly 3 weeks from install, and for the first week I was averaging 18/9, then it went up to 28/9, now this morning...

This is much better than I was expecting at 600m from the cabinet. I hope it stays this way! My telnet stats haven't changed - all my downstream and upstream stats are at 0 (INT and Delay) so not sure why the improvement, but I like it :)

I'm pretty stoked with it. The Chorus guy told me my line was capable of up to 39 so it's good to see it performing close to that. That was a wireless reading, too.

I've finally got VDSL installed for myself which is ironic only since I helped out so much on this topic before I left Telecom :) - my estimated line distance is 580m according to the DSLAM and this is a classic situation of "wires don't always go in a straight line" since with us the cabinet is at the top of the hill just 110m away but the phone cables go all the way down the hill and back up.
