Interesting plans. Not quite as competitive as Snap, but Snap don't currently service Palmerston North so the comparison isn't really fair. Kudos to Telecom for entering the market.

I have a question for tomorrow's chat - Will Telecom add $10 to the plan prices for provincial areas like they currently do for ADSL plans?

davidcole: Does anyone know what will happen with overage? Will there still be the choice like in the ADSL plans of slow down or data packs?

It's going to be exactly the same as current ADSL where you are slowed down to a certain speed, or pay overage.  Not sure about data bumps, don't think that's part of the current offering from Telecom.

The media release implies "no":

"Telecom CEO Retail Chris Quin says UFB is a national roll-out so it’s appropriate to have national pricing."

If true, it will be good to see the back of the "backwater surcharge."

Cool.  If only it was available before 2019 for me...I'd probably switch.

I would doubt it - the $10 variation exists because a phoneline costs more outside Wellington, Auckland and Christchurch than it dos in these areas. UFB pricing is fixed across all areas and Chorus and the LFCs.

Another question, more of a clarification, about the voice services. The press release stated: "For customers who take up Telecom Ultra Fibre, Telecom will retain their existing copper-based phone lines to service voice, monitored alarms, faxes, EFTPOS, SkyTV and medical alarms. Telecom is looking to introduce a voice over fibre product later this year with development well underway, which will open the opportunity to transition the other non-voice copper-based services to fibre. "

I'm assuming this means that the existing copper landline is retained and the phone plugs into the standard phone jack, but the new ONT is installed and provides the fibre service. Have I understood this correctly?

Also, if someone is on a current VoIP serrvice (e.g. Xnet Fusion), will there be a charge to "re-activate" the copper line when moving to Telecom's UFB service?

interesting isn't it, so by the looks of it they have no voice offering so must use existing copper so effectively maintaining 2 networks for a single customer, this has to be costing them on each customer.

Also how are they going to service UFB in Green fields where there is no copper .... the troll VGA is going to have a brain explosion over this

Yes existing POTS copper will be used to deliver PSTN / Phone services from the trusty NEAX switches not VoIP into a RGW aka Router like what Orcon / SNAP do.

When it comes to being on a current VoIP stack with XNet and moving back to Telecom, not sure about that, but I think there is a general reconnection fee.  Worth checking with 123 about that one.

Exactly, Telecom is not providing any advantage over their existing services other than speed. Transforming to a retail service provider appears to be non existent and this is merely an ISP play to a very specific point.

Ideally I would have expected a package that takes into consideration the speed, increased rate of data consumption (caps), ability to offer services across the connection where it wasn't capable with copper  All bundled up into a really nice package. The other end of the spectrum is to provide purely a connection for those able to sort themselves out with VOIP services etc.

Along side that something that takes into account the transition to fibre from copper e.g. education program, in house assistance, UPS for power cuts etc etc.

But that is just me and I have solid ADSL performance & understand the social implications of the service changes.

Well  according the Chorus map I won't be getting UFB until Jul 2015-Jun 2016.

So at present I have to stick with TCL Warp which is fast enough but has very scanty caps.

I guess my best option is to see if Vodafone ups the caps in line with their DSL plans.

Staying in Wellington. Check out my AirBnB in the Wellington CBD.  https://www.airbnb.co.nz/h/wellycbd  PM me and mention GZ to get a 15% discount and no AirBnB charges.

Athlonite: Here a question for them

I'd like to know just when will UFB be available in Tamatea Napier so that we can take advantage of these new UFB plans from Telecom NZ

Telecom aren't building UFB. That question needs to be directed to the LFC for that area which is Chorus.

Plug your address in here:

http://www.chorus.co.nz/maps

It looks to me like parts of Napier have it already but that Tamatea, while in the final coverage zone, isn't planned before 2017.

Cheers - N

Yeah that's what I'd already heard from an Chorus tech who was workin out on the street a few months ago he said 5yrs .... I really don't want to have to wait another 4 years though that's just bollocks

did the map+ address and received this as an answer

Salisbury Avenue, Tamatea, Napier 4112

Network capability:
Broadband > 20 Mbps (with the right modem and plan)
Broadband > 10 Mbps
Network upgrade scheduled:
UFB fibre up to 100 Mbps between Jul-2015 and Jun-2016

I feel your pain, I'm in Chch and Enable haven't got a clue when fibre will be in my area - or they just aren't  sharing that info publicly.

Unfortunately this can't be rolled out to everyone overnight. Some people _WILL_ be getting this deployed in 2017, 2018 etc. They are always going to feel hard done by.

Cheers - N
