hamish225: why wont 4G work automaticlly on exiting sim cards?

Existing SIMs were specialized for 3G to get the best out of them. There was no point in having a SIM accessing 4G until it was ready

A sim is just a billing id number / device ID number.

Not sure what you're getting at. The 4g functionality is in the phone, not the sim.

Good laugh though .

See above.

OK , i understand what you are saying now.

Dingbatt: So I pre registered and Telecom have sent me an email to order a 4G sim. The only trouble is when I click on the link it takes me to an order page (where they have kindly pre-entered my 027 number) and asked me to select my 4G capable handset. However the HTC One isn't shown. My HTC One X which I'm sure isn't 4G capable is one of the sets shown.....
I guess all they are trying to achieve is that they want to send out the correct size sim, so will probably select the One X to get a micro-sim if it's not fixed in the near future.

The One X was put on the incorrectly and is being fixed. If you order based on the One X you will get the correct SIM :)

Done. Thanks for the confirmation.

I don't know the specifics, but I do know that Telecom is working on it and hopes to have it compatible with existing SIMs by about the middle of next year.

This is correct. The existing HLR doesn't support 4G. We have a new HLR that supports 4G and the 4G SIMs are specific to this, as behodar mentioned sometime next year all SIMs will be transferred to the new HLR and then you won't need a new SIM card. Naturally most people don't need (or care about) this information so 4G Sims are optimized for 4G is the answer you will usually get. Had to get some clarification on that one :P

That makes more sense now, Thanks for the explanation

There is an update for the Nokia Lumia 1020 released yesterday that enables LTE on that handset.

So I was in a Telecom store today picking up iPhone 5S.

One of the Telecom staff told me my old Smart $39 plan won't be getting 4G despite having a 4G sim and 4G capable phone. I was told to upgrade to one of the new Ultra plans, Can anyone confirm?

I don't believe that that's correct... but if you're not in contract then you'll get more data if you move to the $39 Ultra plan anyway (which I'll be doing when my contract's up in two weeks!)

Still got 12 more months to go
I'll see what happens when 4G actually launches then.

That's correct you do not have to upgrade you can access it on all plans although we do recommend the newer plans :)

TroyRF: There's a bit of confusion already over the "selected plans" line [...] 4G will be free to any customer with a 4G-capable phone.

Yyrael: only Ultra plans will have access to 4G, you have to upgrade to get access.

Yay, conflicting information! :)
