Well from hamilton today, which is a long way north of taupo..

I had a strong 3G telecom XT signal as others did where I was but, my iphone was saying:
"cannot find a data network"
and we couldn't call out or call into Xt
We even tried calling from telecoms old cdma network into XT but nogo.

Which is why I was asking, if there where any backup/redundancy systems in place that will switch in when something like this happens ?

With immaculate timing I received a reply today from Steven Joyce to a letter I wrote him with respect to the December outage. In his letter he says that Telecom executives have told him they knew the cause of the December outage. Today's recurrence (and Telecom apologists put down your pens for a minute - as a user experience it is an exact recurrence) shows that at best they were incompetent and at worst, grossly negligent.

They may have fixed the particular technical failure but Telecom and Alcatel-Lucent haven't done a sodding thing to prevent a similar event taking down the network again tomorrow or the day after as today's outage proves.

Sure, there will be technology failures but your design and your recovery processes better allow for that and clearly in the XT implementation they don't.

As they have built and operate the network IT IS UNRELIABLE.

Paul Reynolds has reputedly (see above posts) announced an independent review. I hope this time the findings will be made public so we can judge for ourselves if anything other than window-dressing has been done. And lets see some accountability - where's the shareholding minister when he's needed?

As a 2 Degrees customer I can assure you their network has always been reliable using GSM here in Wgton. No outages since they launched.
Perhaps we should rename the XT network the lucky dip network.

So... did Alcatel-Lucent supply the RNC thingo for the network??
The reason I ask is they have produced some godawful handsets in the past IMO. I wonder if the RNC is of the same lineage.

The independant inquiry is helpful but how about some accountability.... like Head of Mobile DCM, or fall on your sword as in that position the renumeration is huge and with great income comes great responsibility!

The people like NealR etc who have been helpful in their postings are putting Telecom in a better light on here however I am sorry, not physically getting a radio or TV interview from the CEO or head of mobile was not acceptable.

The RNC issue is obviously faulty kit but even more so it shows a lack of forethought in design of the core network and unfortunately this is killing the XT networks reputation.

The lack of attention (by management, where it counts) to these issues is destroying the chances of XT to really shine. I have seen of late some stupid marketing and management decisions made by people with limited ability or understanding inside Telecom and those decisions effect their credibility and customer perception.

Once again *** WHERE IS MY APOLOGY TXT MESSAGE*** for peat sake Telecom is a communications company and still does know how to spread the word to its clients!!!!

Apologies - was merely showing them the same respect they show us, the punters who try to use their network. But two wrongs don't make a right so sorry.

I'm Telecom all the way and I've been promoting XT among all my friends and family, and it's pretty embarassing when outages like this occur and this is the second major outage in a month or so.

I've been getting an earful from friends and family who have been affected by these outages, and who personally switched from CDMA or Vodafone because I convinced them too.

Not a very good look at all when XT is heavily promoted as the mobile network to be with.

What happens from here, do they build more RNCs south of Taupo? Or is the maintenance schedule for these things increased to more regular intervals. Hopefully one of the engineers has a wire coat hanger as backup. Those things make bloody good aerials.

Jokes aside, c'mon Telecom, get this XT network sorted out, and get those smiley faces back south of Taupo.

Oh and by the way this network outage did not cause my dad not to get a xt phone. We will be going to our local Orb Store today!

Sorry to say that despite the best efforts of everyone we still have a number of cell sites down in the lower south island. Work is not stopping to restore service. We also see a higher than usual call drops but vastly improved from last night.

Pretty serious this one then NealR to still have numbers of sites down, thanks for all the updates.

I am heartened by the investigation but wonder who will be doing it and how much of a cover my own butt exercise it will be!!

It would seem and I am by no means qualified to say it, that either not enought capital was invested into the core & wider network (which has happened before) & the new network had to be launched no matter what or Alcatel Lucents design and equipment is sub par..or is there a third issue, mismanagement??

The existance of XT & Telecom in general is at threat as around the industry this was touted as the great hope for Telecom. Telecom as a business cannot afford for XT to fail.

I spoke too soon. Guys from work are still ringing me on my old CDMA phone. They have tried the XT number and as NealR says they are dropping calls, if they get through at all.

I have managed to check my voice mail. Maybe I got lucky with my timing.
