turb: Is there a way of finding out exactly which cabinet/exchange you are connected to?

You can email me "pl at telecom.co.nz" and I can send you a pretty picture from the internal tool showing your address, and where you cabinet sits with a distance in-between.

Hi I have been trying to get telecom to Connect VDSL on the Business plan for weeks now and I am getting no where
my neighbor got VDSL with another provider on the same box 15 days ago

I got this email on the 3rd of september

We are still waiting to hear back from the Migration team to advise if this has been completed of not. We will let you know when we are able to enter your VDSL request.

FIPD Broadband to VDSL

Broadband profile called FIPD will need to be migrated to the newer profile BBA before a VDSL connection can be run by the Online Team. This will add approximately 2 weeks to the connection time.

Please let us know if you have any further queries about this.

I was told last week that I should be connected I waited no appointment
and I waited all this week no appointment frustrating almost think if its gonna be this kind of hassle to break my contract and sign up with another provider

What I have to ask about the above email is why would it take more time to connect me when a neighbor of mine was connected on the 29th of August
also I was sent my modem over a month so I have been in the system for a while

anyone else having these issues

Hi,

As per the email you received you are on an older profile called FIPD, FIPD is a profile that predates Chorus and Telecom becoming seperate entities and has different rules to it entirely. One of the rules for VDSL is that you must be on one of our newer BBA profiles which adhere to the separation agreements between Chorus and Teleco. As was also noted this can take up to two weeks, once you are migrated the online team will let you know your appointment from there.

Other providers such as the one your neighbor may use will not have this issue because well they're not Telecom and don't have FIPD profiles.

If you received that email on the 3rd of Sept then the migration team will probably be migrating you shortly and then you'll be on the home straight.

Hi again so they are migrating me to the new system well i want to add this

a two months ago when i approached telecom business hub about Vdsl i was also in talks with vodafhone

because i had the home phone and broadband with telecom and business cells with vodafone

i wanted everything as business because i work from home and always use cell for calls but the business receives landline calls.

my next question two months ago when everything was switched to the business plan could i have been migrated then
i had told the hubs guys that chorus was working on our box and as soon as it was ready i wanted on Vdsl before i even signed up.

in the last reply you said other isp's are running different systems so if i had went with Vodafone i would already have VDSL
Seems poor that connections take this long to migrate when other isp's can connect straight away.

seems like poor management when your competition has such an edge with connections

seriously looking at Snap only $249 to break my contract Snap offers free connection where as Telecom wants to charge me $199 for the connection

not much of a cost to get it sorted

Lord save me. Couldn't figure out why a local network fileshare wasn't working. (and a FTP site)
Had everything setup, Router had rules in place, nothing could get to either.

Scratched my head, went back through firewall settings on the machine (I run comodo), router setup removing and re-creating App rules and pointing them at a client. Sweared and cursed in binary, hex and octal. Was just about at the point of putting the router into bridged mode and dragging my old one back out to be the local network router when I noticed Windows firewall was set to automatic. WTF?? was my first thought to say the least. That explained a LOT. Shut that heathen of a thing down so I've only got 1 firewall running and things magically started working.

Lesson learnt from this, Because you have disabled it don't assume it's not magically re-enabled itself. (Yes, the windows service WAS disabled). Double check it, it's not always the new hardware thats at fault.

I will say one thing for the router rules on the new thompson VDSL modem, they have an annoying habit of saying there is already a rule in place when there is not.
Rebooting the modem didn't help, only think that helped with that error was powering the modem down between rule removal and adding again.
Think I might go to the CLI, it's easier to do stuff on and know whats happened.

variations in speed tests and youtube performance

Connected to VDSL 6th Sept and been doing regular daily speed tests - highest was 45mb (big grins for that one) - lowest is 26mb. Very pleasing really but wondering why the large variation ?

Also we watch a lot of youtube and haven't noticed any increase in video response or download speed. When i use a friends VPN logon ( routing via an aust or usa server) it works better but straight through telecom it is slow. Is this because of a bottleneck caused by their YT caching system/servers ? Was hoping we could stream 720 or 1080 to the big tv but have to settle for 480 on the computer which is what we did previously on dsl.

Generally though I am happy to be on vdsl and the 10mb upload speed is amazing.

I'm no expert but I understand VDSL is a lot more sensitive to general noise on the line, so depending on what else is going on in your neighbourhood, it will have more noticeable effects on your line performance.

Are you connected via ethernet or wireless? I've read quite a lot of comments that wireless streaming from the Technicolour modem is not great, and people have improved their experience by bridging the Telecom-provided modem to a top-end wireless router. As an example, a friend of my sister on UFB 100 improved his downstream from mid-60's to mid-90's by hooking up a Linksys. I've pondered doing that myself, given streaming from my computer to my TV has been dropping out consistently since I started using the Technicolour.

it points to tnz-akl3 and yes i am using auto dns

Youtube used to have a good built in speed comparison option when you right clicked the vids but its gone now - shame as it was useful

This confirms you are pointing at an optimal server with a _heap_ of spare capacity. There will be nothing limiting your loading from a network level. That said, Youtube video delivery isn't straightforward.

I don't know what your level of comfort is with mucking about with this sort of stuff, but you could TRY this... I know it has improved things for some people (although in some cases they were working around issues on their own PC)

I installed that (quite useful thanks)

unfortunately broadband cant download the stream fast enough without the player catching up and then pausing. THe concept works great on 480 but 720 or higher and it just cant keep up. I also noticed that if i view a popular video that it plays fine but when i view a niche video that perhaps hasnt been cached then it stutters and wont stream.

Besides 3rd party add ons is there anything else that can be tweaked with the connection settings at the isp end to remedy this ? . I'm sure that my experience cant be typical so there must be something amiss ?

PS: I use chrome but tested explorer and same issue on that

I get that problem on Vimeo a lot, so I usually just start the video off, then pause it after a second or two, allow the entire video to load into the buffer, then restart it. Bit of a pain waiting for the whole thing to buffer, but guarantees smooth playback. And you should be able to do it for YouTube with that add-on enabled.
