I feel your pain, I'm in Chch and Enable haven't got a clue when fibre will be in my area - or they just aren't sharing that info publicly.

Unfortunately this can't be rolled out to everyone overnight. Some people _WILL_ be getting this deployed in 2017, 2018 etc. They are always going to feel hard done by.

Worth checking Enable's site again, it was updated recently. Wrong half of my town, but at least they've started planning for it.

Just checked again as I posted... The majority of Chch is "Planned fibre coverage" with no dates. In fact there are no dates for the "under construction' or 'next in line' areas.

Well that's a disappointment, the less-rich areas of the North Shore are a bit of a gaping hole on the Chorus map. Looks like we're not getting UFB any time soon and neither is the local school.

The 30/10 500GB for $129 isn't much of a upgrade over the 20/0.8 ADSL 500GB telecom plan I'm on now :(

Although the faster upload speed would be great ;)

Schools are special cases. Don't bother trying to read UFB availability maps if you are concerned about when a school will get coverage.

These plans don't really give me the urge to switch, which I think is their ultimate point ...

Currently get phone line + dsl and a cap of x for y
These plans say, no phone, just BB an 'upto speed' (read, be disappointed) a cap less than x and pay more than y.

Nice diversion from the current redundancy stories though I guess.

School Plans:

Education Broadband Ultra Fibre 30 (speeds of up to 30Mbps download/up to 30Mbps upload).
$129 plus GST p/m with uncapped data on a 12 month term.

Education Broadband Ultra Fibre 50 (speeds of up to 50Mbps download/up to 50Mbps upload). $159 plus GST p/m with uncapped data on a 12 month term.

The plans include:

• Free installation.
• Free business grade wireless gateway (RRP $299).
• Schools must be within Chorus UFB footprint and have fixed voice with Telecom.
• For terms and conditions visit www.telecom.co.nz/fibreforbusiness

So still no sign of RBI plans yet, sad that Chorus have rolled fibre to nearly every Rural school in the country, yet non of these very small to small (0-200 kids) can afford the starting price of around $300/month, sounds like we still need to wait for the never appearing N4L.

myfullflavour:I read an interview with the CEO(?) of Telecom where they made it quote clear that data caps is a core part of their business model - in similar to fashion to electricity... You use data, you pay for it. You need more? You pay more...

I'd hoped with the Chorus split and a new CEO etc Telecom would have abandoned that attitude. Oh well I guess I can just go back to labeling them greedy money grubbing pricks, and advocate for them to be nationalised and run as a "for the good of the community" organisation like Wel Networks etc.

Some of the poorest areas of Dunedin appear to be the first to get it, so I really don't think it's about rich and poor.

I am in ChCh too, I checked Enable's site and I cannot get it, but it is over the road. Oddly, its a park. So the park is getting UFB as its green :-)

I'm a bit disgusted at the plans for UFB from Telecom.

"The cheapest 12 month UFB option for households will be $95 a month for 50 GB at up to 30 megabits per second download and 10 Mbps upload, rising to $159 a month for 500GB on speeds of up to 100 Mbps download and 50 Mbps upload."

I would have expected all plans to have the 100Mbps download capacity. Surely fibre optic doesn't limit the upload to 50Mbps, either.

Hopefully Vodafone come out with better plans.

be disgusted at the government/crown fibre holdings not Telecom (or any other ISP).

It is them who manadate the various speed options that can be purchased by the different RSPs. They can buy a 100Mbps input, but it costs considerably more and as such very few people will take it.

GPON supports 2400 Mb/s down and 1200 Mb/s up per circuit*. As each circuit is shared across 24 customers, that's 100/50 each.

*I'm not sure whether "circuit" is the correct term.
