So I called up the first time around and was told after 30 minutes of the "fibre specialist" humming and haring that I couldn't have telecom UFB because Orcon "requests" to have the copper line removed from the property when the Chrous tech does the fibre install.. I didn't buy this reason and called Orcon for some more info.. as I suspected this was not true. The copper line still exists at my property.

Called up again, spoke to someone a little more helpful, they signed me up and two days later my Telecom modem arrives. On the same day I get a phone call from a lady at Telecom saying they cant do the fibre install because Chorus have informed them that there is already fibre to the premises... *faceplace* I go to explain yes that's correct. I've had fibre for over a year now and would like to move from Orcon to Telecom. 

After some time on hold I am told it is not possible to move from Orcon to Telecom because "Telecom have yet to come up with a process of switching existing fibre customers onto the Telecom network" and that I don't need to worry.. they will send out a prepaid courier bag so I wouldn't have to pay to courier the modem back.. Thanks I guess?

I can't understand why it's so hard? Can anyone from telecom confirm that it's not possible?

We've come across it twice. I'd expect to see it happen more as those who jumped onto "certain other ISPs" discovered the service wasn't quite as advertised (CG-NAT? What? I didn't agree to that!).

Would love to know who's doing CG-NAT!  Mind you it's where things are going with IPv4 space at a premium, at least until IPv6 is fully adopted...

Hi DT, as plambrechtsen says, please PM him your details, and we'll see what we can do.

This is not only an issue for Telecom, but all ISPs who use Chorus for UFB. The issue we need to work around here is what we have experienced before of doing a relinquish with your old ISP, and a new connect with us, and having a 4 day period inbetween where you are out of service. (Chorus don't yet have an order to transition between ISPs for Fibre).

I do know that we have transitioned people successfully between ISPs for Fibre before, so am confident we can bring you over without the experience I mentioned above, because no-one wants that!

Was there some talk about the ONTs having multiple ports where different isps could be assigned to different ports? If so, would it be possible for a new connection to be set up, and, once that is done you could terminate the 1st one?
Probably no process for that though...

So.... Let me get this right.... there are people out there.. With fibre.... who are having issues switching between companys when they have fibre....

 

 

Personally, if I where to be out of service for 4 days. I would put up and shut up just to get off DSL for fibre....

Hi all,

Long time viewer, but newbie to post.



I read the initial post from the user which states he is a Orcon customer on UFB wishing to change to Telecom for UFB



I read also that the initial install when he signed up for UFB with Orcon, the copper line was removed. Chorus will generally remove the copper if that is the service that the ISP asks for, you can ask for copper to be reinstated (at cost), but generally, Chorus will use the existing duct and feed thru the fiber (room permitted) but ur copper will be disconnected. Again if no room in the duct, chorus can lay a new duct to house both the cable and the fiber ( again at a charge) but that will be obviously on ur ISP/Telco passing on the charge.

I believe, the reason, Telecom initially said they cant connect you is this.......... Orcon asked for the copper to be removed, at this stage, this creates a problem, Telecom can provide data over fiber, however, only providing Voice over copper at this stage.... there own website states this, and for most of 2013 anyway, \

this is why, before, when telecom owned the lines (as such) if you was in a fiber area, you had to sign up with WorldxChange for your voice/data services.



Telecom are still developing a Voice over Fiber product. if Telecom wishes to connect you, they will need to get Chorus to install a new copper cable in the duct/overhead to provide you with service... again who wheres the cost, that most likely be you, or unless they have a way to sign you into a contract for ex amount of time.



What I have learnt is when UFB comes



Overhead wires to your house - Copper removed (Maybe wrong slightly)

Underground to your house, they dont remove it just disconnect it - use the same duct for fiber (room permitting) or lay a new duct for the fiber. ( maybe wrong slightly)



Hope you get your connection sorted in the end :-)

Orcon has 12 month contracts I believe. If you want Telecom UFB why not get just UFB with them and switch to 2talk or WxC for your phone - they both are capable of delivering a VOIP service.

This may be a dumb question, but can you just get Telecom UFB without a Telecom voice product? Almost sounds like you can't and therein lies the problem for those without copper anymore.
