No 4G on my Telecom 5S. Did get a carrier update enabling it though.

I don't have a 4G SIM but I also got an update on my Lumia 1020 enabling 4G. Also the HTC One I have here came from Telecom and is 4G-enabled.

Perhaps the "little birdy" was telling you that mobile devices were being updated but the new iPhone 5s/c already came with the update installed - not necessarily "using 4G" but "capable of using 4G".

The 5S I got from Telecom today definitely didn't have the carrier update enabling 4G on it out of the box

Uhhhhh not sure which birdy told you this. There has been a 4G trial going on for sometime which may be what the birdy is referring to? However there is no early 4G release that I am aware of, and I would hope I would be aware of it haha

You will need a special sim that is registered on the correct HLR so I doubt the are any in active circulation apart from those on the trial.

If the IMSI starts with 53005219 the 219 being the important range then it's a 4G sim. But those sims should be on their way to those who have signed up already well in advance of the launch next month.

Yes, 4G Nano SIM's are being provisioned from today (not all stores have stock yet) for customers taking up iPhone 5/5C/5S. You wont be able to actually access 4G as it hasn't launched yet but it means you are one step ahead for go live date having the 4G SIM already.

Carrier update is available for the iPhone 5 enabling 4G on device.

If you don't plan to travel through AKL,WEL,CHCH then you wouldn't need to actively get one, but if you do at least then you will be ready for launch down here when it rolls out.. Its free to change your SIM.
