Hi guys,

I switched over from ADSL to VDSL today and a Chorus technician came over to setup the line. He confirmed that the line was alright, but could not get to check the modem as it had some issues with the power adapter.

I've set up the modem now and DSL light is lit up but the internet light is down. The settings on the modem (Zyxel VMG1312-B10A) are

Type: VDSL over PTM
Mode: Routing
Encapsulation: PPPoE
PPP username/password: Something/something
PPP autoconnect: Ticked
PPPoE Passthrough: Unticked
IP address: Auto
NAT Enable : Unticked
IGMP Proxy Enable : Unticked
Apply as Default Gateway : Unticked
VLAN: Ticked
802.1p : 0 [0-7]
802.1q: 10 [0 - 4094]
MTU: 1492 [68 - 1492]

I was able to retrieve some diagnostic output from the modem. It shows under Mode that it is VDSL2 Annex B. I have an Annex A modem. Would that be the cause?

Also, BigPipe FAQ states the uses of VPI and VCI values. I dont have these options on the VDSL settings (however they appear on the ADSL settings page). AFAIK, these settings dont really matter on VDSL.
I 've already opened a support query with BigPipe, but was wondering if any of you could help out. Please advice.

Thanks

Where did you get the modem from?

I bought the modem from ebay Germany. I had an option to choose Annex A or Annex B type modem, and chose the former after confirming with BigPipe.

I presume it is tagged to VLAN ID 10 (802.1Q) . Please see below:

Do you mean you asked about this modem specifically, or just asked whether vdsl in NZ was annex a or b?
As far as I know, annex b is for vdsl over ISDN, which is not what chorus do, so annex a is correct.

Buying modems from overseas is very risky, they aren't telepermitted so it's pot luck whether they will work.

Any reason why you didn't buy one of the many modems available in nz?

I asked if the line in NZ was Annex A or B.

I bought this modem because I had used zyxel before and found it to be easy to configure and gave a reliable connection. Cost was also a factor.

Could be the issue if there is no default route. Try ticking it.

So would this be a case of the modem not being compatible with Telecom?

Probably irrelevant if is compatible with Telecom, as you have nothing to do with Telecom.

This should probably be ticked as well

If there was 2 models. Annex a and annex b, and your is displaying annex b, is it possible they have sent you the wrong model?

NZ uses Annex A, Annex B is used in Germany where they use ISDN for most phone lines rather than standard POTS.

I don't actually think a Annex B product would sync, but it's possible it can and that you simply have the wrong modem.

FWIW you're also breaking the law by connecting a non Telepermitted (well technically now a ChorusPermit) device to the Chorus network.

NAT is also required to be enabled as NAT is a core function of a router. You would disable NAT if running it in bridge mode.

The seller had both Annex A and Annex B for sale, and hence I had to confirm with BigPipe as to which one to use. He sent me Annex A and confirmed this yesterday after I sent him the line statistics (my 1st post above).

Now I tried flashing two different firmware versions, one from the seller and the other from the zyxel site but no joy.

Before I made the switch to VDSL, I tried this on ADSL for a few hours and it worked fine.

Hi,
Not much more to add here beyond what has already been said.

If you decide it is your modem at fault, and you still really want a zyxel one, this one is telepermitted.
