Hi,

I have a problem with my new Bigpipe connection. I will get an intermittent issue where I lose full internet connectivity and cannot browse or connect to any (or most) webpages.

Sometimes this fixes itself after an unspecified amount of time, other times I have to reboot the router (HG659). My PC is connected directly to the router via Ethernet (1.0Gbps), and the router confirms that there is 1000 Mbps full duplex rate to the ONT. The firewall level is set to 'Low'.

I suspect it a problem with DNS, although when I changed from Bigpipe's default DNS servers to Google public DNS I think the same problem occasionally occurred.

I have also paid for a static IP address, if that's relevant.

Any help or suggestions would be appreciated.

Thanks.

You're not alone. I recall having intermittent issues a while ago but it's been fine recently.  that said, I can't remember what DNS servers I'm using at the moment. I was changing them daily for a bit while troubleshooting this.

Here are some other threads with issues:

I'm still suspicious there are gremlins in there somewhere but haven't personally had any issues since they evicted the IPv6 issue gremlin.

I had a similar issue not long after I signed up which was resolved pretty quickly by BigPipe support. I needed a new static IP though.

Ok thank you for the advice.

I have tried Google's DNS tonight and the issue still persists. I suspect I am best to raise this through BigPipe support?

I had the same problem when I was with Bigpipe, I ended up switching to Google's DNS and the problem went away although it added a bit of a delay to queries. I've since switched to 2degrees and have no DNS issues anymore.

I've not had any issues at this stage - with a static IP. I do know of someone who had similar issues, BigPipe supplied them a new Static IP and the problem went away.

Have you lodged a support request with Bigpipe?

Geekzone isn't an official support channel.

I checked my router last night and I've been running fine on BigPipe's DNS since June.

Unfortunately my spare Mikrotik doesn't support PPP so I can't use that to test.

I've created a ticket with BigPipe and they're looking into it smile

Will let you know of the outcome if anyone's interested. Thanks for the suggestions and comments.

Just to chime in - I had the same issues (I run my own DNS server at home, which forwards onto BigPipe's DNS) - switching to google's DNS "fixed" the issue for a short period of time, but the ultimate fix was that BigPipe needed to change my fixed IP.  Since then, it's been rock solid.

Hopefully by now you should have had a response from BigPipe.

Cheerio!

Does anyone know why changing the customer's fixed IP would fix the issue? I'm just curious about the technical reason for it.

There has been issues for years with bigpipes dns servers, not really sure why as they aren't hard to run. Workaround is always to use different dns servers (google etc) and the issue will go away. (non static ip here)

I had a new connection in a different city completly and within a couple of days ran into the dns issues again lol

Anyway...

if you change your dns servers and the issue still persists then it's likely not related to bigpipe dns.

It could be an issue with the modem and windows 10 potentially - trash modems e.g technicolour had large issues with w10 and dns. Fix was to replace it with something else.

There may be firmware updates that could help

BigPipe have given me a new IP address and this has fixed the issue. To clarify, it is nothing to do with their DNS servers - the problem happened on Google's as well.

I'm very impressed that BigPipe got this resolved so quickly, so kudos to them.

I ran into the same issue last week. Bigpipe switched my IP yesterday, and unfortunately the issue has gotten even worse on the new IP. I have multiple sites I'm unable to connect to (connection reset), and even more DNS issues than before. This is incredibly frustrating to say the least. I'm replying back to them now to have it switched again. I've been extremely happy with them for years now, so hopefully this can be resolved quickly.
