I just signed up with the Telecom Broadband package, free self-install, free modem, free connection. The issue I have is that, when I connect my modem up D-Link G604T, my computer connects to the router (via Ethernet port), but the router does not connect to the outside world. This also happened with a USB router I tested (Thompson SpeedTouch 330). Both routers report everything as fine, and I spent an hour on the phone with a call centre chick trying to sort this out, going through all the settings etc.

Both routers refuse to ping google.com/yahoo.com/xtra.co.nz.

If it is related, when I had the D-Link installed, and was talking to the call centre chick, it was "Connected" under WAN settings, but later when I looked at it, it was "Not connected" and whenever I pressed the Connect button it didn't do anything except reload the page.

I'm inclined to blame this on Telecom, though I'm inclined to blame global warming on them too.

Any help?

Hi, there are two phases to being connected, one is layer1, getting a DSL connection, on the DLink modems this normally is indicated by the ADSL led changing from off to steady green. If flashing then it indicates data passing over the link. This first stage is a basic connection level between you and the DSLAM port at your local exchange.

The 2nd stage is PPPoA, this is when your password is authenticated and if accepted you gain are given an IP and routing access onward to the internet at large.

Do think you make it to stage2 or is there still an issue with connection. If you go to the STATUS tab in the web interface, and look at the details in Device Info, LOG and most importantly ADSL what do you see.

Uhhhmmm, yeah. I'm passing authetication (at least with the SpeedTouch). Its reporting speeds of around 5mbs (I'm not sure if this is unusual, the house is over 100 years old, and it got rewired in the '60's, I live about a kilometer and a half from the exchange too).

Anywho, yes, I am getting authetication, the connection is active, bytes are being sent frequently, though Bytes recieved is static at  2756. Sounds like  I'm just not getting the  information back.

Did you get an username when you signed up? If you didn't you may wish to use the self-install CD or call the helpdesk.
You'll need to enter it into your modem, simply using the default username isn't enough.

Once you've done that, ensure that you are getting an IP address and is connecting correctly. failing that, you'll need to contact the helpdesk.

No worries with the user/name password. Though, when I tried to sign in the first time with *******.xadsl@xtra.co.nz, it didn't autheticate. However when I added bb to the xtra domain (as in *******.xadsl@xtrabb.co.nz) it did autheticate. I got this from the default settings for the D-Link set-up (it said under username "Username: username.xadsl@xtrabb.co.nz).

That could be your issue there. Usernames should be in the format <username>.xadsl@xtra.co.nz. For example alice.bob becomes alice.bob.xadsl@xtra.co.nz

You may want to consider getting the password reset by the helpdesk and retyping it into your modem.

I think the last suggestion would probably be the best. Over three different phone calls, I've had three different passwords. All three of them seem not to work when I try and connect without the bb add-on.

I'll give helpdesk a call and get back to you to see how it turns out.

Errgg, got off the phone with a password reset. Reinstalled D-Link as well.

No luck.

When was this? I've got a go large connection and haven't had any drop outs or loss in connectivity.

May be a unrelated issue, I think.

Thanks to Cokemaster for getting me in touch with the Telecom guy.

It's all good, it seems no one from Telecom Helpdesk told me that my username was all in Capitals.

All working well now, thanks for your help.Smile
