As per the thread at https://www.geekzone.co.nz/forums.asp?forumid=39&topicid=242387, I too have just discovered that Spark only delivers VoIP to the ONT.

My situation is slightly different, as I have to pull the LAN from the ONT to the router (Fritzbox, ex Snap) on a Ethernet over Power connection due to the design of the house.

I am considering ditching my landline as Spark can't deliver this (and said nothing regarding it when I signed up for two years) but I note that when in the original configuration (phone on Fritzbox), I still get dialtone. Perhaps that's a Fritzbox thing...

Does anyone know WHY Spark can't do what their competitors do here? It's all the same Chrous UFB network. Is there any reconfiguration of the ONT that can be done to circumvent this?

whats the design of your house?

Wheres the ONT (garage)??

My ONT is in the garage, so is my router. I also have the dect cordless phone base sitting on top of a cabinet as well.

cordless phones inside the house work better than they ever did (when the base station was tucked in a spare room about waist level).

I have a unifi access point on the celing in the middle of the house...so the cat6 runs from there back to the garage.

Theres always a way to pull though cables... just need some out the box thinking.

Yeah the ONT is in the garage and the router is on an internal wall downstairs. There is no practical way to run any surface cable without it looking really fugly.

Can you not pull through cat cable using the old telephone cable path? (assuming the router is next to the old phone jack)?

Could you pull up the carpet edges and run the cat cable around the bottom of the skirting?

Delivering voice over the ONT frees the customer to use whatever router they like.

Spark could reconfigure their network to deliver voice over router instead of ONT, but it would mean spending a lot of money for not much point.

To solve your problem without rewiring, you can try sign up for a separate phone company (eg 2talk). This way you will have voice delivered on the router.
