I've been trying to connect my PC directly to my ONT to try and pin down why I've been having terrible latency issues lately.

I followed the general instructions of plugging ethernet from ONT to my PC, then setting up a new broadband connection, putting in the user/password details that were provided to me via email. I then got a message saying something like connecting to internet via WAN miniport, followed by a message saying Error 651 - router/modem reported an error, or Error 720 - something about remote connection could not be established.

I did manage after trying this several times to get it to connect to the ONT a single time (and I was still experiencing the terrible latency issues), but couldn't replicate this on the dozen other times I tried to connect. I tried restarting my pc and ONT a couple times but the problems persisted.

Can anyone shed some light on what these errors mean? They were quite vague and my brief googling of the issue was pointing me in several different directions.

What do you mean by "terrible latency issues"?

If you're already using Ethernet to your router, I don't think there is going to be any difference going direct to the ONT. The PPPoE driver on Windows is terrible (your router will do this part better).

Bigpipe fibre connections are typically provisioned without VLAN.

My bad sorry, should have checked this. Op - have you set up the settings successfully ie. thru control panel via PPPoE and started it via network settings?

My internet has consistent latency issues, and in an effort to isolate what might be causing it bigpipe support suggested connecting directly to the ONT to see if the problem persisted.

The latency issues I am suffering from are packet loss and large ping spikes. I would expect to get around 40-45ms to the oceanic gaming servers, but a few of the hops that look like they are in australia often spike to 150-250 latency when I observe winMTR logs. Occasionally one of these hops will experience up to 20% packet loss.

Double check you don't also have a dhcp client on there. Quite likely your parent network adaptor does.

It's also almost certain your router is not causing latency issues.

Just completed the connection on spark fibre. I got the same error the op did until I put our IP address in. I am assuming that the dialup connection wizard in settings needs an IP address.

Not required. It should use ppp to get the ip. The post I made will be the problem.

Tends to happen when people use unsupported configurations...

Could you explain this further? I'm not super clued up on networking issues and not sure what to check here.

Basically, on a traceroute the routers linking you to the destination are there to route traffic - not spend their resources replying to pings. If you're gaming and looking at the "Latency" in-game you're going to perceive there is an issue if the number is even a little higher. Basically, if it is playable then you're fine, a few ms is not going to make any sort of difference to your gameplay.

There also appears to be another issue at play here also with connections from Spark (and BigPipe, Skinny as they use Sparks network) to AWS where many games are hosted from: https://www.geekzone.co.nz/forums.asp?forumid=39&topicid=267961

Instead of attempting to try and diagnose a problem that simply may not exist, you should provide information with how you're testing, what app / game you're testing with and if it is only that (and not other things). I seriously don't think doing what you're doing is going to prove anything. You should really provide more information of the actual issue you've asked BigPipe about.

Could you explain this further? I'm not super clued up on networking issues and not sure what to check here.

untick this, unplug your modem, wait a few mins then plugin and dial the PPPoE dialer.

Remember to retick it once you finish or you won't be able to connect through your modem.

This was just the suggestion that bigpipe replies with every time I email them about any sort of connection issue, first reply is always connect directly to the ONT and try again.

I wouldn't say I am experienced at diagnosing connection issues, but I play games all the time and I can feel how awful my connection has been for the past 2 months, the gameplay experience has significantly deteriorated. The connection on most nights over the past 2 months has felt unstable, as in, the ping from moment to moment in game is noticeable spiking. This isn't just looking at an in game ping monitor, its the actual feel of the game. Often I will see gameplay in game freeze in place (characters running without moving) and then speed up to catch up to the server.

My main game is world of warcraft and my connection has made the game unplayable on some nights. In league of legends, on past stable fibre connections I wouldn't see my ping change more than 1-2ms on the in game ping monitor, yet in the last month I would often see the ping spike from 50ms to 80-100ms intermittently . The effect in game is very noticeable when this occurs.

My diagnosing of the issue has just been running tracerts and winMTR to the oceanic wow server ip and seeing latency spikes to certain hops, including the last hop at times. I have tried running ping in cmd and noticed dropped packets at times where the connection is particularly bad. I see this on all devices on my network when packet loss is occurring.

I'm welcome to any other suggestions to determine whether this is a problem with my local devices.
