having a look at yourtelecom and the new c510a was connecting to the data network every 5 minutes even in the middle of the night since Saturday when it was connected - so thats meant that we've been charged $1 per day even though we hadn't been using data.

Turns out that by default the phone had created an email account called 'xtra' which is by default set to check every 5 minutes, easy enough to change to check never but since we hadn't created an email account didn't expect it to be active.

If you've got a 510a might pay to check otherwise it could add another $30 to your bill each month without realising it.

Thank you so much for posting this; I was getting so frustrated at it!
I actually switched over to the 20MB plan to try and cover it; but for some reason I'm still on Casual Data. Hmm...oh well. Thanks anyway :D

I suggest you look a the email settings. Specifically the "Check Interval" which is ON by default.

I have an R90, and mine out of the box was set to "pushmail settings" = off (manual retrieval), and "automatic retrieval" under email set to every 15 minutes. So what does that mean?

I'm guessing it means its OFF, but if it were set to on, it would check every 15 minutes, OR is pushmail something different?

If it works the same way as an iPod, then turning Push off will make it check every 15 minutes.

Oooooo, I have a Sony Erricson W705a and it does the same thing!

And I never changed any of the email settings... out of box bug :P

Cheers for this,

Scott

I had the same issue with mine, but set to every 30 mins.

And, to begin with I could not add any other ISP's mail accounts.

Even now I can not delete Xtra account, however I have turned it off.

It's a problem with the Sony Ericssons sold prior to today. Sheesh, I hope I didn't send any out without doing the fix today... My suggestion, buy from a proper agent and make sure they check the settings for you...

Probem is associated with the sony erricson 705 & 510, go to messaging, email, xtra, options, and change check interval from 30 mins to 0 (none)
