I have been watching and waiting for ADSL2+ cabinants for over two years and when ours finally got put in on the road I squee'd with delight.

I kept up-to-date with the migration on Chorus's website and couldn't wait for migration day, which was 15th November.

The next morning I checked my modem which normally read around 4500kbps and it read 19276 Kbps - awesome!!!!!

But I had been noticing some lag with certain websites and WoW gaming this week and thought - hrm, something is wrong.

So this morning I did a speedtest.

<- hrm can't get speedtest code to display

It reads 6.95Mbps Down and 0.33 UP - To Auckland

What could possibly be going on here?  Why does my modem give one figure and speedtest gives nothing near to that, should it not be 19Mbps.  All previous speedtest.net results always displayed the same stats as the modem.

My Cabinant is TBY/F and I live very close to it.

Youre probably still on a ADSL profile, not a ADSL2+ - you'd have to contact your ISP to ask when it will be upgraded.

Oh ok.  I thought that when it was migrated to the new cabinant, that was when the ADSL2+ began automatically, as they removed the old little white box.

I just assumed that seeing my modem speed was 4x higher now it had been done.  But I see now it must not have been done.  I guess my squee'ing at seeing 19000+Kbps in my modem was a tad bit premature then lol.

I'll call them today and see, it does say DEC 2010 on telecoms website, and that you may notice you are on ADSL2+ before then.

I'm over in Heretaunga and it appears that I'm going to have to wait till June 2011 (cabinet I'm connected to is UP/03) next year before ADSL2+ makes an appearance (I assume that I am on ADSL1 based on my modem telling me it's DSL Path Mode is 'FAST').

On hold to telecom.  Apparently my ADSL2+ profile is activated.

Did a telecom speedtest and got 6.36Mbps.  This is only a differance of 2Mbps.  Have I really waited over 2 years for this?  I expected around 13-15MBps.  Modem says the obtainable sync is 19Mbps - and normally speedtest results show a similar figure to the modem.

My Linksys AG300 is ADSL2+ capable.

So telecom just came back to me and are waiting on the next level of support and is going to get back to me. *snore*

I also explained I am about 6 houses away from the cabinant and should be getting better than this.  My mother lives further from her cabinant and gets 15Mbps.

How recent is the wiring in your house?  That makes a *huge* difference to your obtainable speed.

Telecom recently rewired my wiring, as I had to move my ADSL2+ line to where the computer was - as we had previously been using telephone extensions.  Which degraded the connection.  So that has been moved and rewired, plus the cable from the house to the pole was just recently replaced.  So I would assume the wiring is in tip top shape.

SNR and Attentuation are perfectly good, so the lines must be perfect.  I've never seen them this good.

Your upstream is a bit on the low side, but not enough to cause the slower than expected down stream.

What is you setup? I.E. modem type, any other routers, Windows XP / Vista / 7. Are you connecting over Wi-Fi?

Wired Network.  Linksys AG300. WIn 7.  Only one machine running right now. Nortons Internet Security/Firewall

I don't think it is anything to do with any of my equipment or software.

I think since the migration last week and the activation of ADSL2+ this week something hasn't been configured right on Telecom's side.

There was a Chorus man working outside my house last week, so I am thinking he fiddled with something, while trying to fix what-ever he was working on and it may have affected my lines in some way.

Hi. I just had a similar problem after months of great speeds, yesterday and today speeds have been shocking.  Did all the usual, then rang telecom with my terrible speed and ping results.  Manila put me on to level two in NZ where a very knowledgeable, helpful lady, determined that a cabinet reset had most likely put me on the wrong profile.  So we experimented and it turns out the profile that I was on was incorrect and had defaulted to an exchange profile  (7000 meters away)  instead of from the cabinet which is about 750 meters away.  The profile was called AM  and i think you will find that the profile is your problem as well.

I am now a very happy camper  (just need Telecom to increase my data cap).

Oh thanks for that.  I am still waiting for the telecom guy to call me back.  At least I can get them to explore the profiles.  I had a feeling it was something to do with the profile.  The speeds I am getting for ADSL2+ would be what I would get if it was coming from the exhange and not the cabinant 6 houses a way.

It is a shame that we as a customer have to ring them up to get things sorted right though.  When it should be done right from the start.

I'll get them to make sure I am on a cabinant profile.

Well the Telecom guy didn't ring me back yesterday, so I had to call them again and go through the same stuff just to get through to Level 2 support.  *snore*.

The guy said my profile is definately in the new cabinant and he could see what my modem says I should be getting 18Mbps.  But the speedtest still says 6.90MBps.

So he did some fiddling with the profile and turned interleaving on.  He said as a WoW player himself, we won't notice the interleaving with servers in the US.  So after his fiddle my modem now picks up :

He reckons it is my Linksys AG300 not working right with the DSLAMS?  Not sure if that is the correct word he used. So he is sending out a Telecom one.

So now we have to wait and see if that makes a differnece.

Turning interleaving on is often one of the first troubleshooting steps they take.  However, it most certainly will increase your latency to everywhere by quite a lot often +100-200ms.

If the choice is between 8Mbit/400Kbit with interleaving off and say 18Mbit/900Kbit with interleaving on... as I gamer I would take the slower speed and the lower latency.

There are a lot of older modem makes/models that seem to have issues with the new (ikanos?) line cards Chorus/Telecom are using in cabinets.  Older Linksys models seem to use Texas Instruments chipsets.

Ideally the Thomson they send out (broadcom chipset) will work mint and you can get interleaving turned back off.

Wow doesn't use much bandwidth, 400kbit upload is around 50KB/s, I think wow uses <10KB/s upload.

Probably less when solo, more in party and most in a raid or large city.
