I was for ten years the Administrator (a founding member) of a large Forum for Linux, we had over 1 million members. These types of Forums take a lot of work and time to keep running. They also cost a lot of money especially if growth rate is high and there flow on need to constantly upgrading hardware.

I see no problems with the owner of this Forum recouping costs from advertising or voluntary subscription, he is running a very good Forum with next to no disruption of service, and that is not easy to achieve.

Here is a crazy notion, lets give peace a chance.

Sounddude: This OP pissed me off so much, that I subscribed to prove a point :-)

Sites like these cost a lot to run. Has to be funded somehow, either by ads or subs (or both).

Been siting on the fence for some time and the op pushed me to subscribe as well.

I'm sure I could post a few links but I'd say the content filters would get rid of them quick smart Tongue Out

The OP seems a bit self absorbed to me...

If you want to subscribe then subscribe. If not - then live with the ads...
I know I haven't subscribed - but also know a site like this does cost money to run and am happy with the ads and happy to support the advertisers where I can...

I recently subscribed on the basis that I would spend a LOT more on a mag sub, say, so I owed it to freitasm for the facility provided.

What do I get from this site? Really expert community help and info available nowhere else. Credit has to go to all the experts who give their time and skill so freely.

The site is NZ so we get info about NZ institutions and gear. Overseas sites can't fill that gap.

Enough, already! Keep up the good work and thanks, once again, to all the contributors.

And I guessed it right:

The OP has asked to have his account and posts deleted, including the original discussion (all replies were moved here).

Thought I would say a couple of words about why I decided to subscribe.

Among the most important is that I know how much time and effort it goes into making something like Geekzone work and thrive. That is a large part thanks to Freitasm - but also to all the great people that contribute here.

Another is that I know I don't look at ads (even without an ad filter, most people these days have whats called "banner blindness". Chances are the ads that show on Geekzone are paid by clicks, so me viewing them (or not) won't help Geekzone one bit. I have to click through on the ads. And given I don't really see the ads, that would be of no help.

Would gladly help out with more than 25 NZD per year for access to such a great resource.

Mauricio I would not delete any posts or discussions. But maybe anonymise him if he think it would reflect badly on him... I would like to request that you don't delete this thread or any messages I have written.

About to subscribe after spending numerous years on here and gaining invaluable advice and help. Not sure why I haven't previously to be honest, feeling a bit guilty!

Keep up the great work GZ!!

I have been here for several years now and have the ad free paid sub. GZ is a must visit several times a day for me as it has some very knowledgeable people here who will go out of their way to help you even in their paid work time. If I was asked "We're going to close down all on-line forums which one would like to remain " the answer would be Geekzone..

Since the OP asked to have all his topics removed I created a new one, moving all the replies here. Feel free to continue the discussion.

Pity you had to delete the original post along with OP's other posts as it gives context.

And I think the fact that you allowed this thread to run, in the initial instance, with out deleting that post is a credit to the GZ 'admin', and the GZ community. Perhaps the OP sees some of that now.

Moving right along........

How many members does GZ have? I work on a site with ~15,000 members which includes a lot more than just forums and it is kept running for slightly less than US$160 p/m. We run zero advertising and it is paid for by donations.

I'm not saying this is the model GZ should adopt but I'm saying that running a larger site can actually be inexpensive if done correctly.
