This is the discussion that followed the "Good bye Geekzone." thread created by a disgruntled user.

The user in questions asked to have the original topic (and all his other topics) removed so I am moving the replies to this one.

Personally I think the value of this site is the people here, who are experts in their field.  There is a lot to be learned on here if you ask the right questions (or just sit and watch).  And I've never felt any pressure to buy a subscription.

I also understand that sites cost money (and time, remembering of course that time is money) to run.  Especially when they are the size of Geekzone.

But everyone is perfectly entitled to an opinion and to "vote with their feet" as it were.

So long and all the best.

I am not sure about the admin demanding $25 to be honest. I've never seen any demands? I didn't subscribe for the stuff I got, I don't personally feel I'd pay for those features on any site, I do it because I want to support the existence of the community where I spent a fair amount of my time. I try and give and receive.

All the best for the future.

Being fairly new to Geekzone I must say I have met a lot of great people here already and had good value from being a part of it. Without paying a dime I have gotten answers to question it would have cost me a lot of time and money (and frustration) to figure out for myself.

I am not sure if you never got any help, but something tells me that you also got your bearings on things in New Zealand through Geekzone and got a lot of good help.

Being a part of a community is about giving and receiving. You have been a member since 2010 and only managed to write 41 posts (1 of those was the one you posted as the good bye message) - that doesn't impress me. Sorry for being blunt, but I am of viking decent and we were never known for our etiquette and have no time for niceties.

So good riddance, take your gripe somewhere else and keep expecting a lot and giving a little, that will take you far in life </sarcasm>

(I'd post this regardless if I was a mod or not)

The world runs on advertising....its everywhere.... it makes the world go round.... who do you work for - I bet they do advertising and you'd be thankful for it because it keeps you in a job and the company alive.

But soon as you find a site that has advertising, you turn off ?

THis article covers it nicely...

PS: We mods dont get paid to be here, we're here because we want to be. Ads or no ads.

I don't have a problem with the Op's post, it is reasonably well written and as stated from his perspective.

Some of the negative reactions only prove his point about arrogance but that is normal human behavior for some.

I don't agree with all his comments and think this a great site hence being a subscriber.

The OP can have his opinion. Obviously I am sad that he sees the world as only he himself is entitled to an income.

I am also sad the OP introduced himself saying "I read Geekzone for reviews of gadgets and plethora of technical news and information it provides. I absolutely love this forum." which is exactly the opposite of his reasoning here.

Looking at the OP profile page I see a few posts where he asked questions and opinion and the community gave him valuable information. He also says someone here on Geekzone sent him a HDD for free. What a great community. What a bunch of good people. Thank you all of you!

I am sad the OP thinks allowing ads on Geekzone, or contributing with $25 a year is a burden on him.

Geekzone blogs are allowed depending on the user standing on the community. When this user asked for a blog I enabled it. The next day I saw his tweet saying something about blocking ads on Geekzone or similar. So I disabled the blog because I want this resource to go to people who participate and support the community.

Not every website is right for everyone. I subscribed because I find the website valuable. If you don't, then don't use it. Easy.

I'm sure I could post a few links but I'd say the content filters would get rid of them quick smart Tongue Out

I used to pay $7 USD per month to subscribe to this site so $25 a year was a nice discount when it was introduced. I did this for three reasons:

1. I hate flash adverts
2. I wanted to give something back to a site I spend far to much time browsing
3. I hate flash adverts

Best of luck OP, I can appreciate some of your sentiments even if I don't agree with them all.

WOW.

If you don't like the subscription, then don't subscribe! Nobody is holding a gun to your head and forcing you to subscribe. The site is free and there are plenty of non subscribers on this site.

I am a subscriber because of the vast amount of knowledgeable information and people on this site. I most certanly did not become a subscriber to get rid of the adds.

Keep up the good work Geekzone. Love this site.

Chaitanya:
So I started thinking what valued add I am getting from Geekzone.  Again I couldn't find a justifiable answer.

I looked at Homepage of Geekzone and started analyzing section by section and items in the menu bar.

I don't have to visit Geekzone to read Reviews.

Chaitanya:Despite all that, I visit Geekzone for no particular reason. Still I believe I am adding value by contributing to their traffic which in turn brings lot of benefits

As others have said then maybe geekzone is not for you ...

This OP pissed me off so much, that I subscribed to prove a point :-)

Sites like these cost a lot to run. Has to be funded somehow, either by ads or subs (or both).
