freitasm: People asked for BBCODE and when we have done it, people didn't use.

url linking to me would be one of the smallest reasons to request bbcode support... I'd only ever want it for the "[url=http://...]Description[/url]" variant of the syntax, relying on auto linking for bare URLs.

When I want bbcode, I want it for markup, but usually because the forum software in question doesn't allow html markup. Here, I tend to only use bbcode for quotes.

With sufficient regex application, url auto expansion can be implemented in such a way that it only ever auto links things not already auto linked, or bbcode'd already. Many moons ago I wrote a parser to do this for a small closed community site.. that er, closed.

On a related note, I'm definitely against the buttons beside the avatar... but I did like the suggestion of along the bottom of the post on the left.

Oh, and the reference to the bad centering in IE reminded me that the +1 text is fairly inconsistently aligned too.

edit:
freitasm:

At the end would have TinyMCE - BBCODE - Auto Hyperlink. Three parsers too many to my taste.

Can the TinyMCE (I always forget this exists... disabled it the day I signed up) parser be switched off, then just use bbcode, or auto if bbcode not present?

What about the buttons under the avatar, like they are except two columns of buttons per row,
so you might have a slightly wider avatar area (acceptable trade off with wide screen the norm?)
while minimising the vertical impact of the buttons. (Two rows instead of four 'normally')

I.e:
Stalk user & Report on the first row
PM User & Add Friend on the 2nd row.

Have you thought about giving the buttons under the avatar picture, and the +1 button, a more modern style sheet design?
They are quite 'Windows 3.1'

I already said two pages ago THIS IS NOT THE FINAL STYLE.

On the other side of the fence, while moving the buttons around I managed to reduce the size of the script and the number of conditions to be tested. This should speed up pages on the server a little bit (not much on a single page view but everything we cut in each of a few million pages a month is good).

freitasm: All about testing. A small row of icons would be "lost". The buttons take too much space. But really, those buttons shouldn't be on the topic like before (except perhaps Set Answer as noted).

We had images before, but one per line. One of the reasons I decided not to use images now is to reduce page load times even more - less images means faster.

I know I am late to the game, but isn't all the images 1 image that is then cut up by css?
I could be wrong but, If so changing how much of that is displayed would have no effect on page load times?

WE have most of the images in CSS sprites, yes. But I am trying to reduce even those. Having said that we moved "Answer" | "Not Answer" to the post itself tomorrow and that was another image added to the sprite.

Looking good! Even works on IE7 (as long as you don't click on it)

Since I was doing this I also changed all the hyperlinks Moderators used to access to the new style as well:

Thanks for all your efforts to improve the look and feel of the site.

Can I be pedantic and point out something please?

Some of the forum subheadings start like this:
"Please use this forum for"

While others start like this:
"You can use this forum to"

It just seems a little bit untidy and I wondered if the wording could be made more consistant? Cheers.

I have to say that I'd love to hire a professional copywriter just to write those forum descriptions. Seriously, hard to come with different things. Should all be the same "This forum is for Telecom users"? Well, the forum name is "Telecom" so isn't it redundant anyway?

Back to the design, still have a couple of things to move around but pretty happy so far - moving the buttons also gave me the opportunity to look at some of the code, and I have eliminated probably around 1/3 of the [IF] statements we used to have in that block of the script by moving things so that single blocks could do more.

I'm prepared to put my money where my mouth is and have a go at re-writing them.
If it's ok with you, I can PM you a copy of updated subforum headings.
