Just had a play with the new feature, very interesting... To be able to list Amazon ads both ways using ASIN and the new way is really cool.

I have fixed a small problem with timezones - not a big deal for people in New Zealand using the Geekzone Blog, but overseas people were seeing the Start date in NZST instead of their local time. This is a problem because everything is stored in NZST, and those users would have no idea of what time was that really.

Also fixed is a small problem when deleting a List Item, the page wasn't returning to any List - just empty. It's working fine now.

There's only one outstading fault, and I am on to it now.

Interesting, I deleted 2 list items and didnt feel anything 'unusual' in terms of usuability that seemed odd... ! Must be getting late... ;-)

And last (known) bug is fixed: RSS partial text is now working.

On to Geekzone Blog stage II soon.

What you guys think of "invitations"? Seeing you're trusted people, I was thinking of distributing invitation codes so that people that are "invited" can automatically have their Geekzone Blog enabled without having to post in the forums first.

I really want this tool to take off...

Invitations sound like a good idea.

But IMO let this wait a little till more stages of the development are done so that there would be more reasons to let people use the feature...

I just dont think that at this stage the blogs stand out from other tools outthere such as MSN Spaces, appart from the customised google/amazon ads + community base, so users might not see much incentive to join - hence wasting invitations...

Maybe run a poll with proposed features and see what people think?

I thought giving the Geekzone Blogs a bit more exposure is better, so they are now moved (in the front page) from the bottom right to the centre, just after the News section).

I saw that move - looks great!!

Invitations would be good. Do you primarily want a Geek / technology focus? People who find their way here by themselves are likely to start tech related blogs (+ other personal stuff). But I know if I invited my sister for example, she would open a blog, and it would be about her house, her dog, her son, her crafts, her purple hair (yada yada yada ad nauseum).

I know not all our blog posts are interesting to everyone, but they all fit in with the site (or are written by a person with a similar mindset to the visitors here). Do you want to possibly dilute that, and have a post on the front page about Aunty Mabels crocheted tablecloth getting red wine spilt on it at the weekend?

I cant delete a post either, only un-display it.
I also have loads of PMs in my profile page that to delete i would have to go in one by one (and I am too lazy). A checkbox next to each one, along with a 'delete checked items' would be nice.

That is all. (sorry, started writing intending to write the first 10 words only)

I am not so sure about invitations now. But the idea was to accept people who are "trusted" and provide them with a Geekzone Blog even before they post in the forums (I can manually control this today and I have approved a couple of people already). I would have to code in some stuff and I will be running out of time for other things in the roadmap.

As for the blogs, it would be most interesting to have a focus in technology or people that are interested in technology. This way even if it goes a bit off-topic, it is still geeky.

I also hate the PM deletion page - I will add a checkbox option later (later most of times means in the next few minutes).

A poll is something I don't feel inclined - only a few are represented, not everyone. But I have no problem with comments and suggestions.

What are the differentiation that would make people select one of the other blog tools instead of a Geekzone Blog? For example I am not thinking of having slideshows, like the ones on MSN Spaces. We are not flickr and don't want to replace them. But image upload is in the plans.

The fact that one has to post in the forums first to be entitle to have a Geekzone Blog is a way to reinforce the community spirit, make people know each other a bit better and create "trust" between them. I mean, even if you are in different camps you "know" each other, you know what to expect. And as I posted before in my reply to Tony, it means that like-minded people with similar technology interests will participate, and a bit of non-techie posts in between to spicy up the thing.

What I really want to have implemented soon is the customisation/skin option for the blog pages. That would be a way to each have their own individual space.

I think customisation should be the next great feature.

Invites would dilute the community. Blogs should be for current members, we all know each other in a way and the blog is an extension of that.  If you opened it to everybody, you just have people coming in and grabbing a great free blog without adding to the community thats here already. I thought the 25 post limit was a great idea.

One other thing that is needed.... when we see a list of our blog posts, it shows all posts including those that are no longer shown. It is possible to differentiate between those that are showing and those that are not? Would be very handy

Any chance of a snapshot of some stats relating to GZ Blogs (total traffic etc)?

What about domain names, what are our options to point a domain to our blog, and would this affect Google in any way (and how?), or could I just get a simple redirect?

I think I want a domain to handle all my mail (but still forwarded to my Gmail account).

(Perhaps some suggestions made here and elsewhere might be paid features? Who knows..... not me.... I just think this stuff up, I dont implement it :-P )

Since the launch, a week ago we have 15,000 pages served, 6,000 RSS feeds served.

You can redirect a domain to your own blog, make sure you use a permanent redirect ("301") to your blog address in full (http://www.geekzone.co.nz/tonyhughes for example), and not the blog.asp address.

By using a permanent redirect people will be able to find your site and get to here via Google. It will also prevent Google thinking these are duplicate pages and penalising your position in the search results.
