Just to let everyone here know about it... We are working on a blog feature for Geekzone users. In principle the idea is to each registered user to have their own space (something like geekzone.co.nz/freitasm for example).

The control panel is almost done:

Some of the stuff we are thinking of having here:

  • Blog posts
  • Categories
  • Comments
  • Comments notification via e-mail
  • Comments moderation (automatic approval, manual approval)
  • Pingback
  • Individual RSS feeds
  • List (links, free html and Amazon lists)

We think this will go live in a few weeks, and if you want to give feature suggestions, or participate in a beta when it comes out, please post here...

If you have non-alphanumeric characters in your username, or if you want to change your username before the blog goes live, then send me a Private Message.

The blog feature will be only availabe to users who posted more than 25 times in our forums (and only useful stuff).

It will have a free ad supported version, with details on this coming later - you will like the details!

Sounds like a really great idea. Im interested in trialling the blog blog when it goes beta.

Ok, here is another screenshot, just to hype a little more:

The idea is that registered members with more than 25 posts in our forums will automatically have access to the blog tool - so while we welcome new users, it's up to them to prove they are good community members, worth of a Geekzone Blog.

More on this later, a post every couple of days...

We are still looking for volunteers to test the blog while we develop it. I will be contacting people who post in this thread through PM.

The blog will share the same gravatar you have in your profile now (or should have).

You will have your own RSS feed and some interesting monetising options.

Amazon lists will be one option to monetise your free blog - you will be able to enter lists of books you're reading, CDs you are listening to, and if you have an Amazon affiliate code then you will be able to cash a little reward on sales.

You can define when (date and time) a blog post goes live. This way you can time your posts for those planned vacations... You can also track individual posts pageviews.

Its looking good - I have played around with my blog, and its functional now.
I look forward to other developments with it.

Hey guys, thanks for everyone helping so far.

I am using my Geekzone Blog to post some information on this new feature - and some of the functions are interesting, including options to make money out of it.

If anyone wants to try it, please send me a PM. It's currently in the works, although functional as noted by Tony.

Lists are live! Lists are live!

Just check my blog to see how it works.

I will post a FAQ page later this week, plus start the RSS feeds (which I am thinking on doing in a very special way).

Folks, you can now enable your RSS feeds. You will need to click [Update] on the Blog Config page so that your RSS feeds are created with FeedBurner.

More details about the Geekzone Blog RSS Feeds.

You will also notice that we have added the formatting buttons to the Blog Entry page - those work only with Internet Explorer AFAIK.

It looks like we only have the comments/moderation to go before opening this to a larger group for beta testing.

    Way to go!

Google Search for trademe sells itself.

Google does pick up and rate Geekzone Blogs rather well. I guess lots of thought needs to go into the wording that is used, the example above wouldnt exactly be a common search term. It simply appears to be a case of 'be relevant, and appear high in google searches' (and 'have a Geekzone Blog' of course).

a Google search for "trademe sells" (without quotes) brings GZ front page in at #16 or my blog in about #29
Im sure better wording could have improved both of those dramatically.

Indeed. If you want to be in the top search results, be sensible with the content.

    Check this post about Google.
