I used to use Internet Explorer, then Firefox. My Granddaughter got me onto using Chrome and I find it the best of the three. I did give the Window 10 new browser Edge a try but Chrome leaves it in the dust. lol

Now with nifty ascii formatting of my nix'ed html table!

Here are some comparative timings for loading page 1 of this topic. Unscientifically generated using Chrome developer tools. Individual samples vary quite a bit but experimentation suggests that the samples below are representative for each configuration.

Vanilla, uncached refresh | 2.2 | 5.0
Webpass, uncached refresh | 1.9 | 2.5
Vanilla, cached refresh | 1.6 | 3.7
Webpass, cached refresh | 1.5 | 2.0

Based on these measurements and my subjective experience the Webpass configuration is definitely faster. Improvement in time to display page ismarginal but human-detectable. Improvement in time to finish loading is substantial: ~50%.

Webpass and Geekzone Subscription share the same principle: pages are generated and sent to the browser without the scripts we use to load ads or track ad blockers. This means pages are smaller and faster to render.

Nice to see this! There's more things we can do to, in some cases, eliminate almost all our contribution to load time. This could shave anywhere up to 0.2s more off load time for Geekzone, so there's room to improve in the future.

Cool. One concern I have about Webpass is potential downside impact on time to start streaming the response from the web server. Assuming the server app's processing latency is the same, what is the worst case scenario for any extra delay introduced by Webpass due to a slow/faulty network connection between app server and Webpass?

It will depend obviously on the server-side coding. If you have a bad dev who put in the request to webpass with an infinite timeout (if it's infinite it's not a timeout, right?)...

There are two main connections to our server.

First, when you visit a site, the plugin creates a unique key which is sent to our server to be used by the publisher to verify that the visit was valid. That request is performed asynchronously, so shouldn't cause any noticeable problems if there's a problem with the connection to our server.

The other is when the publisher contacts the server to verify the key. As freitasm points out, if there's no timeout used on the connection, then that would cause a significant slowdown. With a well chosen timeout, it should be fine, and we aim to have our servers up and accessible as much as possible.

There is another trick that publishers could use. We only pay for one hit per hour (see the last section on https://webpass.io/support/article/how_money_is_distributed). What we could then do is send a time value with each reply to a publisher, indicating how much longer they can assume visits from that user are valid. The publisher could then store that value in a cookie with the user, and not even bother to check with our server if the next pageview is within that period. That way they're only calling our API at most once per hour for any given subscriber.

If publishers use a timeout, and this time-left value (which we don't currently send), then that should minimise issues for those cases where the connection to our server is weak or broken.

I will take a couple of hours during this holiday to change the way it works. Where today we always hide the ads by default (for visitors using webpass, logged in or not), I will change it to hide by default to visitors that aren't logged in, but respect the Subscriber options in the profile for those logged in. This means people can use webpass and still see ads if they check the box (I know of a few subscribers who do this), as well as hide signatures and the right sidebar in forums.

I will post here again once I release this change.

A new version of our site was released and here is how it works:

Webpass.io visitors that are not logged in will see no ads but continue to see the forum sidebar.
Webpass.io visitors who are logged in can now turn ads and forum sidebar ON/OFF from the profile page, exactly PayPal subscribers can do.
Since Webpass.io visitors are considered subscribers, those visitors who are logged in will also get the Subscriber badge.
Webpass.io visitors who are logged in also get the new Webpass badge.
