I seem to having all sorts of problem embedding hyperlinks in Geekzone forum posts.  Sometimes they work, and sometimes they don't, but when I go back in to edit, the syntax looks OK.  I have a feeling that problems arise when end square brackets merge with the URL, but editing that out does not always fix things.

I also wonder if issues are browser specific/  For instance I can't save my Geekzone profile with Firefox (34.05) but IE 11 saves changes OK.

If anyone has any tips, like the order they use to insert hyperlinks, I'd be grateful to hear them.

TIA

There is no secret. You can do it in many different ways, including BBCODE.

1.If you are using the rich text editor just enter a URL (starting with www. or http://) and when you enter a space after it the editor will automatically add a hyperlink.

2.Still using the editor, select a piece of text, click the LINK button and enter the URL (including the http://):

3.In either text mode or rich text editor use the BBCODE, which is a standard so there's no way to wrong. Enter the URL you want between the tags, again including the http:// bit.

4.In text mode you can enter the HTML a href tag manually too. This is the only one that requires you to enter quotes because that's just plain HTML. Do not use quotes around the URL in any of the other methods.

By default these methods (except BBCODE) will open links in the same tab. If you add a link. You can select the link and click the LINK button in the editor to change the destination tab, as above.

Are you using script blockers? Are you using ad blockers? Do you have password managers installed on Firefox that automatically fill the password fields?

Ahhh.  I can see I have been going about it in a very clunky way.  Thanks for the tips.  That looks like a much better method. :-)

Hyperlinking is generally a no show for me. I like to just cut and paste to the editor i.e. http://www.geekzone.co.nz/forums.asp should this autolink?

I use an android tablet and a chrome browser. Not sure if it is possible to get a rich text editor to run on an android tab?

Every time I've ever tried to use a bbcode i seem to get a syntax error and no link try this: [url]http://www.geekzone.co.nz/forums.asp[url/]

Dunno three goes at the last bbcode and it still don't work. Arrrgh who wants to type code anyway.

Edit #4 trial code [url]http://www.geekzone.co.nz/forums.asp[\url]

Edit #5 trial code http://www.geekzone.co.nz/forums.asp

Edit 6: Woo: finally got a hyperlink to work after 5 attempts. I'll forget by the next time which forward or back slash it was supposed to be

I'm not using a rich text editor apparently and so no: paste and space does nothing

http://www.geekzone.co.nz/forums.asp

There you go. Pasted and spaced.

If you see this on top of the textarea then you're using the editor:

The editor won't show if you have disabled it in your profile or if you are using a smartphone or tablet.

How to enter a hyperlink:

  • If the editor is active a space after the URL will automatically hyperlink it but as noted it will continue until the next space.
  • If you have the editor you can select the URL (or words) and click the LINK icon (it's the first one) and enter the URL there, including the http:// in front of it.
  • If you are not using the editor you can enter the HTML tag <a src="">text</a> as another option.
  • Or use the BBCODE [url] with the closing which is always a forward slash.
Four different ways of entering URLs, for everyone's different skill levels - including text, code, HTML or graphical UI.

Can't be easier...

For me this always causes no close open tag messages. I wish this bug would get squashed.
