Hello folks

We thought for a while in adding an element of social gaming around Geekzone. First idea was "Geekzone points" based, on activities around the site, but after some consideration we decided that giving users badges would be more fun.

We are slowly introducing Geekzone Badges, to measure system resources impact. The initial two badges are Welcome and Twitter:

Users will be notified of new badges on the main site only, but activities from mobile and apps will also count towards badges.

There is a list of badges to be distributed - based on being Trusted, Moderator, Administrator, number of posts, number of friends, if you posted in a certain forum, and so on.

Every time a badge is given this is recorded in your stream, so Geekzone Friends will see this in their front page and on forum pages, as well as the Wall and public profile pages.

After we measure the impact on the system (and we have the badge designs ready!) we will start loading these. We will accept suggestion for new badges as well.

Any chance to see the badges clickable to explain what they are and subtle hint on how one can unlock them - when viewing a friend's public profile showing those badges.

We will create individual pages for each badge soon. Currently you can hover over a badge in a profile page and see the description and when the user was awarded it.

Could we have an option to not display badges?

I, personally, hate these sort of things, which I consider to be nothing more than a sort of online ego measurement.

That's not to dis this new feature though, I'm sure many users will enjoy it, nice work.

You want to opt-out of badges yourself, and not see someone else's badge at the same time?

If that's the case, then I'll look into it a bit later and put a profile option in place.

Good idea. In our private forums we thought of manual badges - like "Attended Geekzone Pizza" or "KFC or nothing for Nate"...

I don't mind seeing other users badges, I just would like it if they looked at my profile it shows nothing, or user has chosen not to share badges or something.

Most of the badges are going live today. Some will be going later this week.

Any suggestions, please PM.
