I want to get some feedback on the speed tests that I have been doing using.

http://christchurch.speedtest.vodafone.co.nz/

So first of all I am using a direct Ethernet cable to my PC no wi-fi turned and no other devices using internet in the house at the time.

Location is North Canterbury about 30km outside of Christchurch with Broadband.
I have tried a couple of phone sockets in the house and 2 PC with more or less the same results.

I swear my Broadband had got slower in the last 18 months.

I am sure my downloads used to be between 10-15 now a typical result looks like this.

Last Result:
Download Speed: 4336 kbps (542 KB/sec transfer rate)
Upload Speed: 687 kbps (85.9 KB/sec transfer rate)
9/11/2015, 9:39:23 PM

I have contacted VF and they said they will send me a new router and then dig deeper if this does not help.

I would like some thoughts from others if they think a new router will help or if the problem is deeper ?

Thanks

Hello... Our robot found some keywords in your post, so here is an automated reply with some important things to note regarding broadband speeds.

If you are posting regarding DSL speeds please check that

- you have reset your modem and router

- your PC (or other PCs in your LAN) is not downloading large files when you are testing

- you are not being throttled by your ISP due to going over the monthly cap

- your tests are always done on an ethernet connection to the router - do not use wireless for testing

- you read this topic and follow the instructions there.

Make sure you provide information for other users to help you. If you have not already done it, please EDIT your post and add this now:

- Your ISP and plan

- Type of connection (ADSL, ADSL2, VDSL)

- Your modem DSL stats (do not worry about posting Speedtest, we need sync rate, attenuation and noise margin)

- Your general location (or street)

- If you are rural or urban

- If you know your connection is to an exchange, cabinet or conklin

- If your connection is to a ULL or wholesale service

- If you have done an isolation test as per the link above

Most of the problems with speed are likely to be related to internal wiring issues. Read this discussion to find out more about this. Your ISP is not intentionally slowing you down today (unless you are on a managed plan). Also if this is the school holidays it's likely you will notice slower than usual speed due to more users online.

A master splitter is required for VDSL2 and in most cases will improve speeds on DSL connections. Regular disconnections can be a monitored alarm or a set top box trying to connect. If there's an alarm connected to your line even if you don't have an alarm contract it may still try to connect so it's worth checking.

I recommend you read these two blog posts:

- Is your premises phone wiring impacting your broadband performance? (very technical)

- Are you receiving a substandard ULL ADSL2+ connection from your ISP?

Modem xDSL sync stats and distance from the serving exchange / hardware

Speedtests don't really add any value and getting a new modem / router is not going to change anything

Have you got a master filter installed or are you using just line filters?

How do I know/find out how far from the exchange I am ?
I live in West Eyreton, North canterbury

Hardware are you referring to the router which is the standard white one with the display on the front.

What tests should I be running?

I have read the guide and have done isolation tests with the same/similar results.
Also what I am saying is my connection has slowed down in the last 18 months.

Thanks

Very interesting, and certainly worth considering.
Still does not explain why my speed has decreased in the past 18 months.

Gives a good explanation of where the issue most likely is but you need the modem xDSL sync stats but a new modem is not going to help

Would un plugging every filter in the house and every phone and just having the PC attached give a more accurate test ?

Thanks

I'm not sure what your actual problem is - and without answering the questions Peter Reader has asked such as your location and DSL stats there isn't anything that anybody can actually help you with your issue.

The actual problem from the starter post is slow Internet.
As for my location I did give that as well it is west eyreton North Canterbury.
I do not know how or what DSL stats are and how to measure them.
I also do not have the knowledge or expertise to install a master filter.
How can I find a reasonable priced installer in my area.
I have read the posts from Peter Reader but a lot of that is WAY over my head.
Thanks

DSL stats are displayed in your modem's web interface.

Without knowing these it's actually impossible to really offer you any help at all as these are critical to diagnose connection problems.

Your location is also vital as is whether you're connected to a cabinet or an exchange. Without knowing your exact address it's not possible to tell either.

What does the Chorus coverage map show about your address if you enter it?

I am not at home right now but I want to clarify what you mean.
If I log in to my router were am I looking and should WI fi be turned on or off ?
I am using the vf standard white modem.

Going in to the Chorus site gives me network capability >5 mbps
Thanks

Looking around that area and your information above I'd go as far as saying that there is nothing wrong.

My pick is you're on a BUBA connection off an ASAM in which case you're ADSL1 so could have never got 10-15Mbps.

Chorus put you in a 5Mbps area so your performance lines up with that.

Sorry that has gone right over my head.
BUBA and ASAP.
no idea what that is or means and not sure I want to either ☺

So bottom line do you think it is worth getting a master ADSL filter would that speed my connection up ?
And in the past 18 months it has definitely slowed down.
Thanks
