I have a quirky question that I'm forwarding on behalf of a client:

"My caller ID comes up with my number in NZ, but when I call someone in Oz it comes up as 'private number'. Why do you think that is?"

I've had her check ID blocking on her iPhone 8, but all appears correct. What am I missing?

It's not something I've ever thought about. Personally we have occasional phone contact (most is Whatsapp and Skype) with family and friends around the world and no one has ever commented.

I have noticed this too, and have no idea why

Cause the CLI must be stripped out by the carrier in OZ

At the Oz end? Wasn't stated. But I've checked the number dialed and it appears to be an Optus mobile number.

When I complained about this to the Aussie end they were not interested in sorting out out and said it was a privacy thing. This was in the case of me in NZ roaming with Aussie sim constantly not seeing who was calling me making having the number pointless since I was answering calls I didn't know who it was so wasting money.

In the roaming world unfortunately it happens fairly regularly. More often than not, its the international voice carrier chosing low cost routes which usually drop the CLI or return the wrong CLI.

It needs to be logged with your carrier, they will then work with the roaming partner to resolve, its usually fixed fairly quickly by changing voice routes, but will often revert back a few months later.

Its a bit of an ongoing game of whack a mole.

They made it quite clear to me that it wouldn't be fixed up. I occasionally got caller ID from other AU mobile numbers but AU landlines and NZ anythings calling over to it would get the dreaded private number come up.
