I always thought 111 was free?

https://www.reddit.com/r/newzealand/comments/jof4sr/charged_985_by_vodafone_for_4_min_24_sec_call_to/

Anyone from Vodafone (or anyone who knows how 111 works) could explain how this could happen?

Thanks for the heads up. Yes 111 calls are free. Please drop me a quick email to Jason.paris@vodafone,com and I'll get the team to sort this.

Cheers

JP

Why does someone need to email you? You're already aware of the problem...

It is worth noting that 111 is not always free - operators have been able to charge for malicious calls since 2002. While this does not routinely happen, the ability is there to charge if needed. Their is a media release for the $200 announcement here https://www.scoop.co.nz/stories/BU0207/S00195.htm

This is correct, I used to manage the floor of the operators that take 111 calls and take overflow calls during major events. The operators can code calls for various scenarios such as repeat calls when kids are playing, or when no response is received. The above issue looks to be separate though and likely relates to the transfer of the call not being handled correctly.

Just an edit to my post above (hard to edit when it's already been quoted) I meant 2002 announcement not the $200 announcement.

We need the number the call was made from and a bit more detail to fully look into this.

I've pinged the OP of the Reddit thread to take a look at this thread. Thanks Jason for offering to look into it.

The impression I got - and I may be wrong - is that the person with the problem isn't anyone in this thread, and therefore won't be able to provide any additional information.

@tehgerbil, is my understanding correct or have I gone completely down the wrong track here?

Edit: Thanks MM; that's logical! (I haven't had any caffeine today...)

JP is most likely unfamiliar with Reddit (and xposting).

We have no established process to 'verify' ourselves (VF) on Reddit so asking for customer details via Reddit PM isn't a good idea.
