I think the N4 was on higher bands, 2100 or 2600, it was identified in Canada, where they don't use 1800 for LTE anyhow.

Telecom has really missed out big here.

What was it that they released a couple of weeks ago?? It was a trial but a bigger area that Vodafone's launch area..

Telecom's trial is literally a handful of sites using a combination of vendors and 1800, 2600 and a single 700MHz site using the US band plan.

but apparently it's LTE and not 4G. And neither LTE or HSPA is actually considered 4G.

I never did figure out if the hardware does support it on 1800 mhz or what. It is a pity. Even if LTE isn't 4G it's still better than HSPA.

NBR's article describes the data cap issue well:

Vodafone's marketing for 4G includes the line, "Say hello to things like streaming HD movies, or downloading them in minutes."

And ideed you could with download speeds topping 70Mbit/s (and upload speed topping 11Mbit/s in Vodafone tests).

But you would also wipe out a monthly 2 gigabyte data cap in under two hours - a 4G bill shock scenario that The Wall Street Journal has reported on in the US.

I agree with them on this, streaming HD is unviable.

I never did figure out if the hardware does support it on 1800 mhz or what. It is a pity. Even if LTE isn't 4G it's still better than HSPA.

AWS is 1700mhz. Only used in Canada and USA, and only for some providers in some central areas.
It's all the nexus 4 supports LTE on, and its just because it still has the power amplifier in it for AWS, whereas its missing the power amplifiers for other bands such as 1800 and 2600 that the Optimus G has, the hardware the Nexus 4 is based on. It keeps the same modem chip, but the Nexus 4 was never designed or tested to be a LTE device, in fact i believe its not certified for it by the FCC for example, and is therefore illegal to use technically.

I'm also on the original Smart plans that gave 3GB of data. I'd love to try out 4G but unfortunately it isn't an option on this old plan. I haven't seen any plans from Vodafone or other carriers that really compete with 3GB of data, I only pay $40 a month. With Vodafone's Smart Data plans I'd be paying $140 per month for 3GB of data, I don't need the 700 minutes included, I make do with 30.

Hopefully they will come out with some decent plans for those that want to do what they say - stream HD movies - because currently this would destroy most of their data caps before the credits are rolling. For now I will stick with 3G and 3GBs of Data as I don't think I would be comfortable with anything less than that.

I'm pretty sure we will be able to get 4G, it just must be a bug in their online system. Not sure how else we could understand the following statement "A 4G upgrade is included or available as an Add-On with all Smart plans so you can enjoy a better mobile experience when you have a 4G device and are in a 4G coverage area." https://www.vodafone.co.nz/phones-plans/plans/smart/ -Clearly Smart2 is a Smart plan.

Well, you've got three people here on the forum thinking it should be working for them and it isn't. Any thoughts/advice?

Enabled LTE in Queen St, Auckland store at lunchtime today. Free add on to the corporate plan. Didn't appear even after several reboots. Store suggested leaving it a while through the afternoon and rebooting a few times to see if it appeared. If not, they said call 777.

Got busy this afternoon, so just after 5pm called 777. Got put through to a Tech guy (not usual 777 people) who told me that it needed some corporate account tweaking, and that would take up to 24 hours. He's called back and thought he might have worked around it, but didn't get it working yet.

iPhone 5, running 6.1.2, LTE enabled, well inside LTE coverage at work (Auckland CBD) and now at home (Ponsonby).

Moral of the story - if it doesn't work straight away, phone 777 and get on to it. It takes time (which is the opposite of the point of LTE data).

I know what you mean and although the plan is named Smart 2, its a plan that Vodafone don't sell anymore so there would be no point for them to service these with new features.

I've just come back from a walk in the Ponsonby area, and I get LTE when I'm on Ponsonby Road, but when I move 200m off to where home is I don't.I'm in the middle of the service area, and now know that my phone is getting LTE fine, so suspect that the cell that I work off when at home hasn't yet been upgraded :-(

Interesting speed comparisons

3G DC-HSDPA cell at home - Ping 39ms / DL 26.14Mbps / UL 2.68 Mbps

LTE cell on Ponsonby Rd - 23ms / 14.81Mbps / 7.21Mbps

LTE slower for DL? Strange. And repeated result.
