I am pleased to report that I am getting speeds as follows.... 893.63mbps download, 95.03mbps upload on a 5ms ping. I made small changes to my network last night, which caused considerable pain, note to self don't fall out of a wheelchair while over reaching.

I guess Vodafone must have done a lot.

Great to hear (the speed, not the fall), thanks for the update Mike. We found and fixed a few things along the way, but the main problem was a bad connection sorted Tuesday avo. Your line looks stable since then, so good to know the decent speeds have returned.

I guess I spoke too soon, getting some micro outages lasting about a minute.

What is a micro outage, based on your experience?

Always wondered about these comments....

eg loss of IP, loss of connection, connection idle then wakes etc

Connection to the WAN is lost for a very short time, one of the LED's on the VF box will go out. It will be out for say a minute or two sometimes up to five minutes.

Getting low bandwidth to YouTube tonight (~65 Mbps), and really low bandwidth to AWS (~4 Mbps/500 KB/s). I'm trying to both test 8K video playback to see how responsive things are while tweaking GPU intensity in a cryptocurrency miner (checking for frame drops), and I'm also attempting to copy some backups from an AWS instance to my local machine. Both operations are bottlenecked by only one thing: Vodafone. Speed tests are still good, though. Seeing 800 Mbps on speedtest.net, and that's with a couple of transfers going.

As someone else put it, the connection is a lot like having a gigabit LAN, but a VDSL WAN. :\

IMHO that is not a micro outage! I have a Siemens DX800 on my desk, and occasionally the weather feed winks out for about 2s, which I have traced to a dropped connection and a reconnect (but i cant tell by who) and then restores. It's random.

For the LED to go out on your cable modem (I presume), it means its lost its connection completely to the edge node. That is a serious fault situation.

@Mikehales - 2-5 mins of no connection? and your systems can't trace that???

Yes, we can. I'll report that up the line so it can be investigated.

@MikeHales although speed has returned I am still getting short outages ranging from 1 minute to circa 5 minutes. It is not the HG659 it appears to be the WAN as at the time of the outage not all the LED's on the Vodafone Box are illuminated

What do you mean by this? If you're streaming a YouTube video then you'll receive it at the rate required to support the resolution you're watching - in the case of 8K that's 50Mbps from what I can see. How are you measuring this, and what would you call high bandwidth to YouTube?

I was using the "stats for nerds" right-click option. 4K alone has a recommended 35-45 Mbps bitrate, while 4K60 has a recommended 53-68 Mbps bitrate. 8K should theoretically be able to have a much higher bitrate yet. Either way, I was getting a heck of a lot of buffering at an average of 65 Mbps.

I consider high bandwidth to be a relatively reliable 100+ Mbps. That shouldn't result in buffering on even the highest-bitrate videos.

I do understand that bandwidth will vary significantly from video to video based on which cache it's fetched from, but it's still a shame to get buffering on a "gigabit" connection.

For whatever reason, you have unrealistic expectations. I have a Hex core Xeon 3.2, 1060 GPU, gig connection (which I _know_ can sustain over 880Mbps single thread TCP to a server in the same rack as the youtube cache I am mapped to), and I can see the traffic load on the Google cache I am connected to.

I am unable to get smooth playback on 8k60 videos. I think it's unlikely you can be confident that the cause of the playback issues is a bandwidth limitation.

Cheers - N

I do not have unrealistic expectations. I can play 8K videos just fine on my 4.2 GHz hexa-core i7-6800K CPU and GTX 1080 Ti GPU. I cannot play 8K60 videos, which is why I did not even mention that.

I know for a fact that the playback issues are bandwidth limitations because the videos play without any hiccups during the whee hours of the night.

my 70mbps vdsl connection buffers (just) 8k30 videos due to not being able to keep the buffer full plays 4k60 fine

Yep, sounds about right. The bandwidth required for 8K is pretty crazy!

Testing performance between 4K60 and 8K videos while mining is a pretty good test too, since my GPU video decoder handles everything up to 4K60, while the CPU instead gets to stretch its muscle at 8K. Amusingly, 8K playback was smoother than 4K60 playback when I had a miner running at too high of an intensity. :P

Using Youtube download speed is not a good measure. If you want to be sure, rent a local gig connected server somewhere and use iperf to see what's actually going on. Of course you might find the VPS host is the bottleneck there.

Also, I know for a fact that youtube caches can behave differently in peak hours compared to offpeak in a way that could conceivably account for unpopular or not frequently played videos experiencing worse playback during the evening.

Have you been able to play these videos before?
Assuming these "congestion" issues stay the same, what are you planning to do about it?
