Wake up 6:30am and no webpage loading-even local/vfx phone-until 8:02am. Now I feel it seems xnet slaughtered the torrent plan. Getting worse and worse. Is normal plan ok at this time frame. I think I should back to normal plan if I can browse webpages.

Still here I see! About 1 year ago I was with you at the Woosh Forums. I started the "ByeBye Woosh - Hello XNet" thread and jumped ship to report my results - bringing a lot of people with me I think.

For 1 year it's been wonderful. So wonderful that I haven't had to visit these forums anymore to find out the TRUTH (or the rumours) instead of being lied to by a junior ISP helpdesk schoolboy.

I'm having exactly the same issues in Christchurch. Browsing drops to an unusable 3K/bps after midnight. Speedtest.net won't even load (but XNet speedtest *yes local* is consistantly 2500K/bps which is about max of what our line allows).

This morning (Oct 12th) XNET couldn't even connect our modem until after 8am. Don't know if this is related? Maybe they've fixed it? (Will find out 2nite I guess)

I'm off on holiday until Thursday 16th October. If it's not resolved when I return - look out for the "Goodbye XNET - Hello Slingshot" thread!

I don't fancy their 12-month contract - but a man's gotta do, what a man's gotta do. Their FS/FS plan with 15GB and free offpeak 1am-7am looks reasonable at $59.95 p/m (Bit worried about the Slingshot forum reports about current speed issues though!! DOH!!)

PS: You other bad tempered guys - For the record, I'm not a leecher. I've never used torrents. I have an account with MovieShack and buy occasionally from iTunes. I am a staff member at a small video production company. We would do around 15-20Gig of monthly browsing/email + about 30-40 Gig of video file transfers. We find queuing video transfers to our clients in the US in non-peak times fantastic. Well.... until now.

This morning at 7:30 mine was down as well. Could do TradeMe but not Google.

Niel: It is 1:45 on a Sunday morning, unusual for me to be awake but since I have returned from a trip to South Africa... My modem sync at about 9.5 Mbps. Speed to XNet was slow over lunch, a bit over 3 Mbps. Now in "torrent time" my speed to XNet is 7.9 Mbps, to Sydney is 1.7 Mbps, and to LA is 7.2 Mbps. If there is a speed issue, then I do not see it other than expected fluctuations likely due to exchange congestion. Everyone is not experiencing the "problem", unless all torrner users switched ISP yesterday.

I'm sure someone will ask: Fusion, non-torrent, Pakuranga exchange, static IP, 2x VFX lines.

PS: VFX worked perfectly clear between NZ and SA even though in SA we were on about 380 kbps.

PPS: Someone probably already noticed GeekZone is not dealing well with our daylight saving time.

la speedtest is b0rked mate, theres a bit about it on gpforums

The Geekzone server is well aware of Daylight Saving Time - but your user profile is not. You have to visit your user profile page and set the timezone there. There are discussions about this in the Geekzone forum (actually more than one because people don't check the forum page before posting questions).

Yeah, guys, the L.A Speedtest server is inaccurate. More specifically the FastSoft server. When I did a L.A speedtest I'd get either very poor speeds with a ping of about 205ms or very (6mbps+) good speeds with a ping of 175ms on the FastSoft server. This can occur within seconds of each other. The FastSoft server is either giving false readings or it could be routing to a more local server.

Is that the LA speedtest at https://www.speedtest.net/index.php you're talking about? Because that's the one I usually use for overseas tests. If it's that one, I'll change to another city.

Yeah it appears that's the one. The LA speedtests have been known to be inaccurate.

Personally, I do my "speedtest" by trying to watch a clip from YouTube, and using a bandwidth monitoring utility like Netmeter or DU Meter, or iStat Menu on a Mac OSX. Generally if you can achieve speed of about 350kbps then you should be able to get a Youtube clip without (much) buffering. If I can do 700+kbps I can even do 2 Youtube clips at once.

I know it doesn't quite give me the maximum possible readings of my speed, but I find it's far more useful as watching a Youtube clip (for example, or try downloading a file) is what give you more "useful" data. i.e. I certainly don't spend all my time going to speedtest.net and doing speedtests, and the data is not "useful" in any way to me.

That's just my opinion anyway...

I often use youtube to give me a general idea as well. I've been using L.A for yonks, like at least seven years or more and it always seemed accurate to me ie. when everything else seemed slow, LA reported me as slow and vice versa. But I can just as easily choose another city. :)

when 12 hit I cannot go on youtube and now i can go on youtube but hard to stream. and even try to go on google and its slow and same websites cannot even load up thats how poor it is. i am thinking of changing

I just called xnet, and spoke with a CSR/techie named [name removed to protect the guilty]...

As soon as I said 'Torrent', he jumped in and admitted the problem, acknowledging the speeds were rubbish, and that can't even view websites...

He contradicted himself somewhat, as telling me this affected everyone at that time of night, but then said if I change plan my speeds will improve...he backed this up by stating recently the Torrent users have been put on a new router?

His personal opinion was that the plan had been over subscribed, and that in the recent month, to many new people have jumped onto the plan yet no extra resources were allocated, thus speeds have dramatically deteriorated as a result.

He stated that xnet is working on fixing it, 'tweaks', but he reckoned it will go the same way as the Xtra Go-Large plan!
He also stated that currently xnet is looking at changing the plan, to give less hours to download, or less 'free quota', or possibly both.

He said there is no estimated time to fix the problem, and recommended just changing plans in the mean time.

I asked what about my service that I am paying for right now, I want a refund of sorts, he stated to lay a complaint during business hours to a CSM.

So...there it is....simple really, they underestimated the market demand and under resourced the plan...now it is suffering, and they are being forced to either limit the plan, or chop it all together.

Well, I don't think we were put on a "new" router but instead "other" equipment. I also rang up yesterday and was told they made changes on Monday which coincides with the usage meter problems. I asked what changes and he said that we were put on different equipment. They said they were still in the process of sorting it out, details he couldnt give out but he said both limiting the time and data were possibilites that they were looking at and that DPI was out of the picture.

I don't think that people on the normal plan are getting any better speeds after midnight, but maybe someone can prove me wrong.

Well, I'm one of the people that has changed plan from torrent back to standard HSI and the speed between 12:00 and 08:00 is no better. Although I use the term speed very loosely, as I've been unable to get to any international websites during the "torrent" hours for the last week.
